“Since you’re back, are you going to pick the next book?” I blinked. “Me?” “Of course,” she said, smiling. “You’ve been gone. You deserve the honor.” Everyone nodded expectantly. I looked down at the stack of books on the table, my fingers brushing across their covers. My hand paused on a novel about love, identity and societal expectations. This book will give them a glimpse of what I passed through during my absence. I smiled softly. “How about this one?” Brent groaned. “Oh no, not another depressing tragedy. Can’t we read something with a hopeful romance?”

she said, her voice low and mysterious. Kael and Lila stood frozen beside me, their eyes fixed on the book. "What is that?" Kael whispered. Elara's smile grew wider. “One out of three.” Fuck. I let my eyes skim over the first page and go through the basic introduction to the content of the book. My love for anything on paper kicks in soon enough and I let myself get drawn into the pages. The book provides information starting from the beginning of a certain year and goes on detailing the events that took place in that year and the next ten before beginning the next chapter. I read of powerless Kings and magical queens. Political upheavals and the line of Ashryn the Great.

I walked toward the shelves, lazily running my fingers across the spines of the books as I scanned the titles. History of Blood Clans. Treaties of the Northern Territories. Ancient Magical Structures. Boring. Boring. Also boring. Who actually reads this stuff for fun? I kept moving along the shelves until one particular book caught my attention. It looked older than the others, the cover worn and faded like it had been opened a thousand times before. Curious, I pulled it out. The moment the book left the shelf, something clicked behind the wall. I froze. “…Okay.”

I entered mine, went through the three books I had gotten from the store, and set them down on the bed. I folded my arms and read their names. The Claiming Rites, Finding the One, and Under the Red Moon. There was no order in which anyone should read these books, so I sat down and picked up The Claiming Rites. After an hour, I finished reading. The book made zero sense, and then I picked up Finding the One and spent another hour reading through it. While the first book was incomplete, the second made a little more sense. I picked up the third, which I had gone to Zion’s room with. I took my time reading, and another hour went by.

He asks with something in his voice I can't quite identify. "You don't know." I say with a slight chuckle in my voice. "Just pick one." I watch idle as he sifts through all the books until he picks one. House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J Maas. "That is one of my favourite books. Although I might just be biased because I love her writing." I lean back in the chair with a satisfied look on my face. "What makes you love someone's writing?" He sits back in his chair and looks at me curiously.
