Jace DAYS BEFORE The bed creaked in protest as I reached for the leather-bound journal which had turned into a close companion for the last couple of weeks. Forbidden knowledge had been inked into every page with intentionality I could only thank the author for. I opened to the page I had dog-eared for days, sinking into the information there.

I wasn’t. “May I have it back?” ‘You should give it back, you rude twat!’ Bane scolded me. I took the book up to my eyes and scanned the content. Save for a few words on the front, it was relatively empty. “Oh. It’s a journal,” I rolled my eyes. “And it’s empty,” she had an accusing look on her face…one that made me frown as I handed the book back to her. “What?” “You know, since you forgot things…you didn’t think keeping a daily log of things would help you remember when your memory goes ‘poof!’?”

Kate keeps examining the lone sheet of paper like a bingo player with a bingo card. “Think, Kate. Think,” she tells herself. “Try to recall everything you learned from that book.” The book she’s referring to is Codes, Ciphers, Steganography & Secret Messages, which she got from Booksale, a secondhand bookstore. She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath to calm her nerves. When she opens her eyes again, her line of sight falls on the photo of her and the Bali Girls. Then her eyes jump to the words in the letter:

she said, smiling happily at the thought of their first grandchild. “Hopefully, ma. By the way, I’m here to get my books.” “The ones by Jakara Blue? Yes, it’s on the bookshelf in your room.” Later in my room, I indeed saw about ten books by Jakara Blue that were arranged neatly on a shelf. I picked one of them and traced the embossed author’s name with my finger. This explained why I used the name Jakara Blue as my new name in Japan. It must be because I was an avid reader of Jakara Blue’s books. Remembering about my purpose in coming here, I started opening the folders that were arranged on another corner of the shelf. I had the habit of placing important documents in a folder.

I see David at the corner of my eyes , watching us. “Oh trust me , I will not say a thing – don’t want any one else to be scarred for life…” I chuckle. “Oh please…you have been blessed to see such romance – better than any porn video you will ever see” I chuckle at her. “That is what you think… You know I came across a book called “ How to please your man properly?” I think I should let you borrow it , so you can up your performance…” she gasps at what I say.

I announced, injecting a note of reassurance into the room. Trevor, sensing a lull in the urgency, reached into his pocket and pulled out a worn journal. He gestured towards me, saying, "Since we have a bit of time, my father wanted you to read this book. He said it's better you know the things that were written in it." Curiosity piqued, I took the journal from Trevor's outstretched hand. The weight of the worn pages hinted at the significance of its contents. As I opened it, the musty scent of aged paper wafted into the air, adding a layer of authenticity to the moment.

"I'm not sure. But I am almost sure no one saw me, can you tell me what is going on right now? Is it some sort of 'no touch book'?" "Well, kinda. You see that book is not a scrapbook. It's a journal." "Okay, whose journal?" "Everyone you saw their pictures there." "Wait, hold on." "Holding on." "You're telling me that that book is a diary? Like not historical data or educative, I don't know, background checks. You are saying it's a diary?" "Well, practically we go by journal but sure diary works too." "If it is a diary, why the hell is it kept in the library? I have never heard of a diary being kept in a library before."

“The knot comes undone and pulls the paper with it.” I followed her instructions and tugged. The wrapping fell away, revealing the gift. It was a beautiful, leather bound book with creamy, hand made paper pages. The leather was stamped with my name, and the symbol used to denote a healer. There was also a small box containing a beautiful calligraphy pen, with several small bottles of ink in vibrant colors. It was a magnificent gift, a healer's journal. It was something I was meant to fill with my observations and techniques. Something I would lend to other healers, and leave to my protege, perhaps, or donate to a pack library.

“Come on, Jean. Remember.” Dropping the books, I turn towards the huge desk sweeping the loose bits of paper with my notes to reveal the other ledgers I’ve been working on. “Ugh! I really have to organize all of this—there!” Tapping on the name, bookmarking it with a little sticky note. Opening another ledger, I skim through the pages with newfound motivation. After a few minutes, I bring all the bookmarked pages together.
