Chapter 51: Wandering Luna POV: Ariana The borderlands were no place for the faint of heart. They stretched beyond the safety of pack borders, beyond the watchful eyes of humans who traded loyalty for gold. Dust rose like smoke from the dry earth, tangled with the scent of rain-soaked soil, carrion, and wild musk. Wolves moved in the shadows, cautious, wary of humans and rogue packs that stalked them. I walked among them unseen, a ghost in the wind, a whisper in the night.

Damon asked. "Some. Nothing like Grey Hollow. A skirmish outside the border settlement two weeks ago, minor injuries on both sides, one cell leader captured and already talking." Rhys leaned over the map, tracing the scattered points with a tracker's practiced eye. "They're disorganized, which is good news for us and bad news for anyone hoping for a single clean conclusion to this whole mess. Without Malachar, there's no one obvious to negotiate with, no single thread to pull that unravels the rest."

His skin was tanned, as if he spent most of his time outside – killing territory passers – and he had a light stubble lining that perfect jaw. “Name’s Chase, never come into my territory again” he says and I’m suddenly pushed backwards. I land on my bum again, knowing that it will join the parts of me that will become blue. I scramble up, rushing towards Felix. For the first time in our lives, he wraps an arm around my waist, comforting me. “If I see any of you close to the border again – I will end you!” Chase warns. He glances at me for a second, giving me a wink before disappearing into the woods. When he’s gone I nestle my head into Felix’s shoulder, tears leaking out of my eyes.

Instinct takes over and I run, leaving a distraught Rhode to stand next to the campfire. ***** The border of Stormbreaker pack is like a cowboy town with a few wooden shoplots erected from seemingly out of nowhere. Usually, the place is as quiet as a graveyard with but a few traders coming to and fro to sell their goods. But on this particular morning, there is a commotion. And it is not a good one.

Each lunge sent a ripple of pain through my side. I winced but didn’t stop. Pain meant progress. Pain meant I was alive. “You should be resting.” I froze at the sound of his voice. Rhysand stepped out of the shadows, arms folded, and expression unreadable. He was shirtless, sweat-slicked, his hair damp like he’d just finished a session of his own. “I’m fine,” I said quickly, not meeting his eyes. “You’re wincing.” “Doesn’t mean I’m not fine.”

He pulled it open to reveal a young scout, his face flushed red from the cold, gasping for air. "My King... my Queen..." the boy wheezed, leaning against the doorframe. "News. From the border of the Grey Marshes." "Slow down, Leo," Esmeralda said, standing up and walking toward him. She grabbed a glass of water and handed it to him. "Drink. Breathe." The boy took a messy gulp and wiped his mouth. "It’s Rhys, sir. He was trying to slip through the southern pass. He had three guards with him, but they didn't stand a chance."

A shadow crossed the light at the edge of the overhang. “Found you,” Rhys said, voice calm and close. I froze with my fingers still buried inside myself, shorts open, tank top rucked up under my breasts. His boots appeared first, then the rest of him as he stepped fully into the shade. His gaze dropped straight to where my hand was. Heat flooded my face and my cunt at the same time. “Do not take them out,” he said. “Keep working that pretty cunt while I decide how I am going to take you.”

Two more wolves are climbing through the shattered window and I’m backing up and my hands hit the floor and there’s glass everywhere, I feel it slice into my palms but the pain is distant because one of the wolves is looking directly at me with eyes that glow yellow and its lips pull back showing teeth that are way too long. I hear fabric ripping and bones cracking and when I look back at Rhys he’s got the first wolf pinned and his hand is around its throat except his hand isn’t a hand anymore, there are claws where his fingers should be and his eyes are pure gold and he squeezes and I hear the snap.
