Boring Books For Bedtime Podcast Novels & Stories

I sat there listening to the most boring account of the book we were reading by Dr Flint. It was Flint’s voice that was the problem. He droned on and on. What made it even worse was that every few lines, he stopped and explained to us what he had read. It was so grating, I could feel myself falling asleep. My eyes were so dry and my lids so heavy. I tried desperately to stay awake, but the more he spoke, the closer to sleep I got. I gave in and closed my eyes, still concentrating on his voice drifting through the room towards me.

He couldn't fall asleep even though he was tired, it felt as if something was stopping him from doing so. After a while of silent staring, he gave up and turned on the lights. He'd just have to study himself to sleep. Pushing himself off the bed, he scrummaged through his backpack and pulled out his history textbook, the most boring subject of them all. He laid it on his desk and began to read. After a few minutes, his eyes drifted off the text and around his bedroom, wandering to different walls and corners. Aiden began to tiredly name objects in his room, mumbling softly as he looked.

I picked him off the floor and walked us to the bedroom. "Can't I stay up for five more minutes?" Adrian asked, his beautiful jade eyes shimmering in the glow of his Power Ranger night light. "No, baby, you have school tomorrow," I told him, getting into the bed beside him. "How about a bedtime story?" "Yes!" he squealed excitedly. I chuckled and brought out my phone. After a few pages of the children's book I'd saved on my Kindle, Adrian was fast asleep. Plugging my phone in, I settled beside him, stroking his dark hair away from his chubby face.

"If you call me Bad Daddy one more time, I'll kick you off the bed." Vincent corrected himself. "Daddy, I want to hear a bedtime story." Ambrose pondered for a moment. He then opened his phone and started searching for a story. "Do want to listen to The Brief History of Time or The Origin of Species?" Vincent had a confused look on his face. "I want to listen to Pepper Pig." Ambrose was dumbfounded. "That's too childish. Besides, haven't you already watched the cartoon?" Vincent looked up at him innocently, "But Pepper Pig has 195 episodes. I haven't watched all of it."

The sound of the door clicking shut was the last thing I heard before sleep reclaimed me, pulling me back into its embrace. *** I found myself rummaging through a stack of books that likely belonged to Jacob from his university years. None of them were fiction. These were all about life lessons and self-improvement. Titles like Rich Mindset and Atomic Habits caught my eye, their well-worn spines suggesting they had been thoroughly read. But one title stood out above the rest, stopping me cold:

“Come on kids! We’re getting late.” With hesitance, I looked over at Brett who refused to meet my eyes. With his head hung low, he got off the bench and walked toward his mother, without bothering to wait for me. Reluctantly, I followed him. Once I reached them, I held up the cover I was holding out to Linda. “What have you got for us, honey?” Linda asked with a smile. “Hello, Linda,” I said. “These are a few of my favourite books and some cookies. My mom used to read these out every day so I could sleep. Little Anne always gets bored and cries at night. You can read them out for her. They are very interesting stories.”

Xavier said as I settled Loise in bed. “Okay,” I nodded, because I had something to ask him as well. I nodded and picked her bedtime stories. It was a Sleeping Beauty retelling. Xavier’s POV I never thought I’d attend a book reading, talk less of one for little children, yet here I was watching Nicole read bedtime stories about a sleeping knight and the princess who came to save him. “You do this to make her sleep at night?” I asked. “Yes, you should also try it since you have that thing… insomnia,” Loise said.

“It will be a while, but it will pass. Yer going to meet someone who will change the course of yer life.” “I’d be more impressed if you could help me sleep.” Camille teased. “Yeh don’t sleep?” She shook her head. “I have chronic insomnia. I can’t take medication and was told to read something boring.” She scoffed and motioned to the large collection of books. “Of course, I’m the weirdo that finds encyclopedias interesting.” “I speak to the dead. Yer not the only weirdo around.” “I have a book about that.” Camille marked her place in her book with her bookmark and sat it aside as she stood up.

I've never called him daddy but he's not here and he hasn't watched any of the videos. "Bad daddy to a good girl" I add. Don't blame me. Blame the books I read. Taking few more shots that I keep for myself. I settle into my book. Finally, I come out of the tub and toast a bread. Yes, the kitchen is stocked with my favorite cereals and meals. It is three a.m. when I am finally, unbelievably tired. I am sore, exhausted, and yet my mind won't shut down. I fall asleep and I fall into a dream.

Bedtime. Usually, this was Aurora's domain. It was her sacred hour, the time when the CEO vanished and the "Maman" took over. She would read Goodnight Moon or The Little Prince, her voice a soft, rhythmic lullaby that chased away the dragons. But tonight, Liam stood in the doorway. He was wearing a simple gray t-shirt and sweatpants, his feet bare on the plush carpet. He held a book in his hand. Not a picture book. A chapter book.
