Today was the day for some basketball practice. Slipping on his sneakers, Whizz headed outside to the basketball court. The sound of the basketball hitting the pavement was music to his ears as he dribbled it with enthusiasm. With each bounce, his excitement grew, and he couldn't wait to start training. He began to practice his shots, his focus unwavering. The sound of the ball hitting the backboard and swishing through the net filled the air. Whizz's confidence was evident in every movement, his eyes locked onto the hoop as he honed his skills.

But then he recovered, licking his lips, looking even more eager. Brian continued explaining the rules, "If a ball hits the ground, it is retired, and a fresh ball is put into play." He pointed toward a small bucket of gleaming white ping-pong balls on a countertop behind him. "For the shot to count, keep your elbows behind the edge of the table." Hycinth listened attentively. "No fingering or blowing." At this, she squeezed Gwen's hand and raised an eyebrow. Brian caught her questioning expression and opened his mouth to answer, but Ever interjected, teasing pointedly, "Males finger and females blow."

"A mechanic." "That's right." Ethan sighed and took the last riddle. "A magician promises that he can throw a ball as hard as he can and have it stop, change direction and come back to him. He claims he can do it without the ball bouncing off of anything, the ball being tied to anything, or the use of magnets. How is it possible?" He read slowly as if what he just read was completely foreign to him. He scratched his head and gave various answers but none of them were right. Soon he was frustrated as his time neared its end.

So did their weight. Turning it one more time, he noted the ninth ball at its core, a small, almost indiscernible piece that on its own seemed insignificant. A worthless piece on its own. He fingered the object and felt the connection. Each ball was linked to the core, though loosely. “Let me help…” Ariadne began. He pulled the third ball from left to right and top to bottom, then watched the balls come loose as one, each making a slow exodus to rest on the surface of the desk.

But then, the key snapping had absolutely not been part of the plan and I had no defence for it except that old keys broke sometimes and this had been a particularly bad moment for that to happen. I looked around the room for something to do with myself while the reality of the situation settled. My eyes landed on a table tennis ball sitting on the shelf near the far wall. I crossed to it, picked it up, and started bouncing it off the wall in front of me …. catching it, bouncing it again, letting the rhythm of it be the thing my hands did while everything else worked itself out. It actually helped. The repetitive movement, the sound of it, the simple back-and-forth. It was the same principle

"I hear a heartbeat but it is not human it is heartbeats at once." Suddenly a pitched whistle cut through the air from the dark mouth of the shaft three metal balls shot upward. They did not fall they hovered in the air spinning fast small lenses opened on their sides they glowed with a white light. "Scanning Patient 82 " the balls said together their voices were soft like a song for a baby. "The Third Daughter needs a sample Empathy found, Logic found, Shadow found, ingredient: Sacrifice." The metal balls did not attack with lasers or knives they made a humming sound that made Junes head spin.

A hearty round of laughter erupts for the intruders. The King waves his hand in the air. “ENOUGH!” “No, it isn’t! But this might be!” A few people from the middle of the group dart out and throw small, round metal balls at us. The group of intruders then splits apart, revealing several bombs. The timer on each of them is counting down from 30 seconds. My heart races, but I keep my calm alpha mask on. The little metal balls explode in the air right before they reach us and a gray cloud forms, floating down around us.

“You want it to bend, not break. It's not about power it's about rhythm.” She turned, wiping sweat from her brow. “Easy for you to say. You practically serenade the ball into the net.” He rose, rolling a ball toward her feet. “It’s not magic. It's mechanics. Wind, rotation, tempo. You don’t attack the canvas; you guide it.” She gave a mock snort. “So now you’re an artist?” He juggled the ball, feet moving like liquid. “You’re the architect. Precision. Structure. But even buildings need curves sometimes.”

“Hello, ma and sir! If you’d like to win one of our amazing prizes, just play the game—$5 per try!” Liam pulled out a bill and handed it over without blinking. The man handed him three balls. “All you have to do is knock down the bottles. Hit them hard enough and you win!” Liam took the first ball, aimed with what looked like minimal effort, and threw it. The ball slammed into the front bottle… but instead of knocking it down, it bounced right off. The stack barely wobbled. I winced. “Aish… Almost.” The vendor chuckled. “They’re heavier than they look. But no worries, you’ve still got two more shots.”
