Then he pounded his fist on his skull, cracking it. The ambush was not large in numbers. But they were strong and skilled. Several warriors were injured while fighting them. Yet they killed all the rogues. Dead bodies littered the grassy surface of the woods. The gut-twisting metallic smell of blood hung in the air. The injured warriors shifted back to human forms and sagged on the ground, groaning and panting. Blaze wanted to proceed immediately but decided to rest a bit for the warriors to have some time to heal their wounds. He shifted back, his sharp eyes scanning the woods.

I shift back quickly, and with my clothes still in my mouth, along with the envelope, we run back to a part of the woods far enough away from Running River Pack lands but not close to our cabin either. When we’re out of harm’s way, we shift, and I get dressed before settling beneath a tree and opening the envelope. I scan it first to see if it talks about the ambush, but it only takes a few words for me to recognize that that’s exactly what it’s about. We did it. The ambush was successful. Bram says two hundred seven warriors were killed in our attack. I can hardly believe it. “What is it?” Jorin asks.

They had been sitting beneath a massive tree, a fire crackling between them. A half-roasted deer hung over the flames, the scent of burning meat filling the air. For a brief moment, everything froze. Then chaos erupted.

The excitement lasted nearly a minute before settling. I folded my arms. "Tombstone has fought wars before." The warriors quieted. "We fought the Red Valley Campaign." Several veterans shouted approval. "We fought the Seven Winter Clans." More cheers. "We fought kingdoms." The response intensified. "We fought monsters." Louder still. "We fought each other." Silence returned.

Archer companies rose from the tall grass they used as shelter and aimed their weapons at the enemy. The front line composed of warriors with swords did the same. Only Lara and her units remained hidden behind the front line of the warriors. It was part of the plan. Ghraht knew that even if the war chiefs decided to surrender, shamans would never agree to it. They would use their blood magic to create chaos among his people. There were three more units like Lara’s hidden on each flank and back line. Their only task was to kill the shamans.
