Ivy’s POV When the first rush of air fills my lungs, it feels like a lifeline tearing me away from some cold, terrible place. There’s a strange urgency to the feeling–that first breath is almost gentle, a soft gust of wind, the tender brush of a familiar hand against a flushed cheek. But the next breath that comes is a desperate, coughing, almost choking thing as my lungs do their best to remember how to take in air. The breath after that is even more ragged, and I can feel my chest heaving over and over again as I go through the motions of taking in air and expelling it even more rapidly.

I did not say anything during the entire thing and just watched her quietly as she put on her show. I wanted to know just how sincere she was during our seven years of friendship. By the looks of it, I was too naive and mistook this venomous viper for a harmless pet. That was why I ended up dying so tragically in the previous cycle. “That’s fine. As I got closer to the sound of the person breathing, the atmosphere around there became so cold, it was the darker part of the library and I could hear my heart beating wildly in my chest

I breathed into him, my heart sinking deeper each time my lungs filled with air and his body remained unresponsive. I dragged him away from the inferno, the heat intensifying, clouds of smoke swirling around us. He was heavy, lifeless, and I struggled to position him on the ground, my own breath coming in ragged gasps. Again and again, I tried—my tears mingling with the blood soaking into the earth beneath us. Each time I leaned down to breathe life into him, all I could feel was the cold reality of death creeping closer.
