I felt like my chest was getting tight, my breathing was becoming erratic as I felt like I could pass out suddenly when my door opened, hands pulling me up out of the car, steadying me next to it as his voice began breaking through the muffled barrier that seemed to have been up. My mouth was open in a gasp that never came out and my hands were reaching for my throat, almost clawing. It was as if I was suffocating. With time, I realized that I was indeed suffocating. No matter how I forced myself to, I could not breathe.

I sucked in a breath that didn’t come fully. “What–“ The book slipped from my hands, hitting the floor with a dull thud. Pain spread through my chest, sharp and hot, pressing from the inside. I grabbed the edge of the table, my knuckles white. “Stop… stop…” My knees buckled. The cold floor met my skin. I pressed my palm against my chest, desperate to steady my breathing. It didn’t work. It burned. Not mine. I squeezed my eyes shut. The burning sensation spread faster, my breath roughened.

I will not be fine. “Shh. You’ve just got to breathe.” “But I can’t.” I only now realize that my breath’s caught in my throat. And I cannot seem to let it pass. I’m not in control of it. “Breathe, Heidi.” “I― I…” I can’t breathe! “I am commanding you.” I feel a sudden warmth inside me. It’s as if someone blew air into my lungs to release my breath, which elicits a satisfying sensation. The panging in my head doesn’t disappear, but it’s bearable. Maybe it’s because the noises outside have become tiny echoes to my hearing, or because Zavere is smiling at me, while I’m staring into his dark eyes; watching the light glisten in them.

Anna POV I can’t breathe. The arm around my neck is too tight, and I can’t answer the questions that the man behind me asked while he’s suffocating me. The edges of my vision start to darken, and I’m sure that I’m going to pass out. But then the arm releases me as quickly as it grabbed me. My lungs fill with much-needed air, and my body gives out. However, I don’t fall. Instead, I’m grabbed by my shirt collar and hauled into a standing position that’s only slightly more comfortable than being strangled.

Chapter 24 Rosalie's POV I became dizzy, my head spinning not just from the loss of air but the mysterious book at my desk. There was no one else in the room, but it felt like hands were on my neck. I kept thrashing, wheezing for air, nails clawing at the invisible hands wrapped tight around my throat. Panic blinded me. My heart pounded like a war drum, and I did everything I could to force breath in my lungs. Maybe it was because I was on the verge of death, my body couldn't fight any longer, my arms became slightly heavy and my gaze lowered when I spotted a shadow above me.

Instead, flames lick at the ceiling, black smoke roiling over them, coming ever closer. I can’t seem to catch my breath – panic is in me, and the heat – I cough, putting my face down against my arm, trying to breathe through the fabric of my pajama sleeve, trying to get a fresh breath of air – just one – I glance behind me, but the door just looks so far – Then down at Bridgette, who looks perversely peaceful on the floor, her breath coming shallowly, a light sweat building on her brow –

I can’t. My breathing is fast and untamed. My breathing is loud and uncontrollable, more than I can hold, more than I can stand, more than I can take. More than I am. It breaks against the walls, against the wood, against the surface of my resolve. It breaks against me. It breaks against him. It breaks against the silence and fills the silence with something other than air, with something other than breath, with something other than fear. My breathing fills the silence and leaves no room for anything else, anything else, anything.

Breathing. But no longer broken

I couldn’t breathe. My palms were sweaty, and my throat was closing up. Small black dots were clouding my vision. I tried to take a deep breath, but it was cut short by a panicked sob escaping me.
