The guards flock around, protecting the kingdom; none could see me. I entered the palace, and even the inside was different. The furniture and paintings in this palace give me this crazy feeling, which I hate. I continued walking. I had no idea where I was going, but I kept going. I got to the study, and before I could open the door, I heard a loud noise of glass breaking, and I followed it. I got to a room, which is one of the guest rooms. I opened it and entered the room, and I was surprised to see a man and a woman. A boy was on the floor, his hand bleeding from the glass. The woman just broke because she was standing beside a tea table.

A moment passed. "Grace. Sweetheart." Gently, he shook her. "Yes," she muttered groggily. "We will talk now." Her slight catch of breath was encouraging. "Really?" "Yes, really. When you first came to me, you mentioned a book. Where is the book now?" "Oh. That’s what you want to talk about." She sounded disappointed. "I left it at the palace in Nork. I don’t think that matters, though. It was the right book, just newer. And blank." He frowned. "When you read it, the story was about me?"

It comes with a great price. And this is the price I need to pay. “Crown Princess! The palace barrier is broken!” I stood from my seat abruptly when a palace guard hurried to the hall. What? Broken? But it was built by the king himself! It’s an invisible protective barrier that surrounds the whole palace, forbidding the outsiders to go inside without permission. “What do you mean? Who broke—” My jaw dropped when the next moment, the palace guard I was talking to fell in the floor with a sharp blade pierced through his chest.

Sylvia’s face twisted with rage, but she said nothing, slamming the carriage door behind her when we arrived at the palace. Win looked up from his coffee, grinned, and said, “Took you long enough. I thought your pretty prince had finally locked you in his palace tower.” “Please,” I deadpanned. “If anyone’s locking anyone up, it’s me.” He snorted. “Kinky.” I ignored him and grabbed the coffee he had ordered for me. It tasted like dirt and burnt tires. “So?” I said. “What’s the emergency? You dragged me out of the palace for this. It better be worth it.” “Oh, it is.” He leaned forward, slid a black folder across the table. “Your favorite prince’s kingdom? It is about to go broke."

In disarray Drawers pulled out and left hanging open like broken jaws. Papers, scattered, overturned, some ripped clean in half and some clearly unrecognizable. His bookshelves which were once neat now eaten away by termites, his pride had been stripped bare. Whatever secrets this room once held, someone had come looking for them. My chest tightened. “They really wanted you silenced, didn’t they, Dad?” I whispered.
