I drove my brush across the canvas, slashing a bold, jagged X.
Nathan appeared before me, looking haggard and broken. His eyes were sunken, his voice rough as if scraped raw. "I knew you'd be here, Gail. You still hold some attachment, don't you?"
"If you believe that, then you also know you're next," I said, barely looking at him.
He lifted his head, his eyes brimming with pain. "Must you burn every bridge between us?"
My brush paused, the ink bleeding into a dark, spreading stain. "You've earned your fate. You're reborn. You know the full extent of what they did to me. Yet you still defend them."
