Light from the corridor spilled into the library, cutting through the shadows. Survival had not been random. It had been a rupture. And ruptures, once acknowledged, had a way of spreading until the entire structure gave way. The pattern was breaking. And Evelyn would not allow it to mend itself quietly again.

Maera sat in a chair across the room with a knife in her lap and her eyes closed the way cats’ eyes close when they are listening better that way. “I broke the dream,” Evelyn said. “You rescued it,” he said. “From being well-produced.” She didn’t lower her hand. “Your turn,” she said. “Sleep. I’ll practice being ordinary in the same room as you.”

Slowly, she opened the bottom drawer. A single file sat inside. Untouched. Prepared months ago. Just in case. She opened it. RESIGNATION NOTICE. Evelyn Hart. The words stared back at her. The document wasn't new. That surprised most people when they eventually reached their breaking point. The truth was that breaking points rarely arrived all at once. They accumulated. One disappointment at a time. One ignored hope at a time. One laugh at a time. Her fingers rested on the keyboard. She expected tears.

I wouldn’t stop. Because I knew—whatever was behind that door, it would break me. I staggered forward, just as he pushed the door open. And then I saw her. Through a transparent window, Evelyn. Chained to a bed. Her arms strapped to the sides, her legs restrained and spread apart. Tear streaks ran down her pale cheeks, her lips trembling with silent pleas. Her breathing was shallow, chest rising and falling in uneven, shuddering waves.

With trembling hands, Becky opened the refrigerator and took out the ingredients. She didn't know what to cook, but she didn't dare to ask, not after what James Miller had done to her. Honestly, the slap from the leather whip didn't hurt at all, it's just that the pressure he gave really made her mentally shaken. She had never seen such a thing before. She looked up nervously, she could see James Miller was sitting on a work chair facing directly into the vast backyard, his hands were busy typing on his laptop.
