Like CCTV footage. My heart began to race as I watched. The Conti mansion appeared on screen. My car was parked in front. Then a masked man walked toward it. He opened the door. Went inside. Came out moments later. My breathing turned shallow. A few minutes passed. Then I saw myself walking out of the mansion. My face pale. Broken. That was the day I left Matteo with my divorce papers. I remembered the tears. The humiliation. The baby in my stomach.

And it was massive. Older than anything I had ever sensed. Not like the Ancients. Not like guardians. This was something else entirely. Something that made the Veil feel… small. The mist collapsed inward suddenly. Then Reality cracked. A sound like shattering ice ripped across the Veil. The sky split open. Silver light poured out of the fracture like liquid moonfire, burning through the air. I staggered back as the tear widened. “No,” Caelum whispered beside me. My heart pounded.

I needed to get it out otherwise I wouldn't be able to show him how sorry I was. He was in the shower for a long time, but when I heard him shut it off, I tried as hard as I could to stop crying and pretend to be asleep when he walked out. He went straight to the closet and came back a few minutes later and slipped under the covers. I had my back turned towards him, and I had half expected him to roll over to my back and hold me like he always does. But tonight, he kept his back to me. This broke me in a whole new way, and I tried to hold in the sob, but I couldn't, and it broke free. I shoved the covers off of me and ran to the bathroom. I didn't want to do this in front of him.

The only stable thing in a land that had fed off my instability. “Valentina,” He murmured near my ear, his voice low, urging, trying to tether me to him instead of the haze. “Stay with me. Whatever it shows you— don’t let it take you again.” Again… The word hit something deep within me. Because the Veil wasn't just a spell. It was a scar. And suddenly… it cracked. Not in a dramatic explosion. More like glass sighing before it shatters. A ripple went across the air, soft as a breath, and then— everything froze.

Opening my eyes as the light reduces, I saw what was in front of me.

The pack gathers behind me, their fear and awe palpable. Selene stands at the center, her glow pure and radiant. Silas kneels beside her, his silver eyes blazing with grief. “Where’s Zara?” I demand, my voice breaking.
