Comforted a little in this, I hunkered down in the blueberry bushes and waited. One more singing strike. And then silence, filled with nothing but chirping peepers, and then . . . Frogs. Bullfrogs. Only one or two at first, but their throaty calls quickly multiplied into a belching chorus that, unbelievably enough, raised pimples along my forearms. Because they came from the flower garden. The koi pond. A pond only about ten feet in diameter. I had no idea how deep the pond was (the crazy, insane idea that it was bottomless flitted through my head,) but it didn’t seem nearly big enough to hold all those frogs . . .

There was a commotion in the pool as bubbles rose and burst. Were they about to emerge? Alexander halted his steps and gazed at the pool. He had always felt there was something inside, and it seemed there were quite a few of them. Suddenly, water splashed everywhere as a figure the size of a calf leaped out, covered in mud and grime. It was a swamp poison frog. Its first target upon emerging from the water was none other than Alexander. Its elastic, adhesive tongue darted toward him with incredible speed.

The morning was spent fishing. Not for fish, though. The frogmen gathered around the edge of the lake, their Frogfather squatting in the middle paying them no mind, and waded through the muddy banks and rushes. They foraged around for slugs and bugs and various slimy critters which they collected in wicker baskets. These weren’t small, garden-variety bugs. The slugs were the size of your arm. The other creatures weren’t tiny, either. They were all things you would run from your house screaming if you found them in your shower.
