Steam danced above the liquid, floating in slow motion as it left traces of rich caramelized nuts. I licked my bottom lip as I watched my cup get filled. Coffee turned into my new addiction after I quitted smoking. At least that's what everyone thinks. I groaned as I watched the thin line of liquid that connected the machine and my cup vanishes. It made a noise similar to water being drained down the bathtub followed by the clicking of something broken, drowning the peaceful sound. I pulled out my cup. I groaned and then disconnected the machine before hitting it.

So while all I really do is marketing, the patients bring a level of joy I never thought possible to my workplace. After turning the alarm off, I don my slippers and robe, noticing I feel almost human today. However, I still must have caffeine. I refuse to give it up even though Moby harps on me almost daily about how bad it is for my body. Putting my mug under the spout of the Keurig, I press start, impatiently waiting thirty seconds for my cup to brew. "Piper..."

“Tired” She nods her head as I start to drive and says, “I need caffeine”! I pull into the drive-thru Starbucks and she leans over me to make her order of some mango fruity something or other… Her butt is all in my face! I thought she said she needed caffeine. I looked at the digital board for the thing she just named to see its caffeine level is as high as my Americano. How’s that work?!

He handed Caleb a cup of hot chocolate, and the latter glowered at him, “Do you perceive me as a kid? Tsk, I said I want coffee,” “Caffeine is not good for you, kiddo,” Cohen flicked his finger on Caleb’s forehead. Caleb growled and smacked his head with the paper he was holding. “Tsk, that hurts!” Cohen complained. Caleb was about to hit him again, but a woman arrived from behind Cohen.

When I finally looked up, Mandy was still there, sitting on the small chair opposite me, nursing her finger. "Hi," I said, waiting while the final pages printed. "What was it that spilled on me earlier, by the way?" She blushed, looking down at her lap. "My imitation coffee." "Imitation coffee?" She nodded and rummaged through her bag, bringing out a metal water bottle and a disposable cup. I'm not meant to have caffeine — doctor's orders — so I make my own substitute. Soybeans, hibiscus, a bit of roasted barley. Close enough to the genuine article. Want some?"

Both fell into deep silence. Terban cleared his throat, while Ryan took a sip on the Capuccino. “Is i-it g-good?” Terban asked, diverting the topic. “It’s bitter,” Ryan said while frowning. Terban could not believe it, so he took the cup back and had a sip. “It’s fine,” he said. “Cappuccino is really bitter.” He gave the cup back. Ryan was shocked. Isn’t he the Great Terban who is a clean freak?!

Not specifically because she sent me these, but since she was a store manager for the bakery, I was sure she was more than capable of affording the cost of her son’s surgery and help him have a speedy recover. “Here you go.” I set the tray down on the coffee table and handed him his black coffee. “I hope you like it.” “Caffeine is a must to get me going,” he spoke the magical words. “I can’t properly wake up if I don’t get my daily caffeine. If that was the truth, then Dianna should be fucking Wonder Woman by now, just from the sheer amount of pain she put up with on a daily basis. The heat of the shower went a long way to making her feel human, and then the coffee. The sweet, sweet nectar of the Gods. Ambrosia from the temple in the sky. Manna from Heaven. Yes, she knew all about the divide in the medical community regarding whether caffeine was a savior or a hell-spawn demon and she didn’t give a rat’s arse. It helped her. More to the point, she drank it for other people’s safety. Decaffeinated Dianna was not something anyone should have to endure, least of all Dianna herself.
