My hand is hanging at an unnatural angle, the skin already starting to puff and turn a dark red. I brought this upon myself.

The sharp, medicinal smell filled the small space, mixing with the faint salt air drifting in through the open window. He hissed through his teeth when the liquid hit the raw skin, small, involuntary flinch, but he didn’t pull away. His fingers curled slightly, then relaxed again, letting me work. A thin line of blood had already crusted along the edge of the bruise; the skin around it was purpling fast, turning mottled shades of deep violet and angry red. I pressed a little harder than necessary on the next swipe. Not enough to hurt him badly, just enough to make him feel it.

I gently lift her heavy, dark hair, piling it atop her head so I can reach the nape. The cloth falls from my hand, splashing back into the basin. There, right at the base of her skull, hidden by her hairline, is a mark. I blink, thinking it’s a bruise. A contusion from the blow she took. But it’s too defined. The lines are too sharp. I lean closer, my heart beginning to hammer a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I trace it with a trembling finger. The skin isn't raised like a scar or swollen like an injury. It’s flat. Black. Like ink that has been burned into the flesh from the inside out.

Suddenly, my heart did not just thud: it surged. Six beats per minute. Ten. Twenty. The rhythm accelerated with a violent and beautiful spasm. The liquid silver in my veins was absorbed by my bone marrow, replaced by a flush of pure and oxygenated blood. The translucent grey-white color of my skin receded, replaced by the warm and healthy pink of a woman who had finally finished her shift.

Her pale skin had already taken a greenish tint. ‘I’ll have to flip her. the wound wasn’t an avulsion.’ With Flynn’s help, she flipped the bloated body so that it lay on its belly. The ugly looking gash which marred her back lay very close to her lumbar vertebrae. A network of black veins crisscrossed across the wound.

Blood. To much blood.

Then it pulsed. Thin lines branching outward from a central point beneath her flesh. Veins of shadow spreads slowly, faintly glowing red beneath her skin. That had not been there before. I stepped closer. “What is that?” I demanded. The doctor barely glanced at it. “Subdermal hemorrhaging. Possibly a vascular reaction to trauma.” “It was not there,” I said sharply. He leaned closer this time, frowning. One of the nurses angled a brighter light toward her arm. The dark marking reacted, It shifted. Spreading slightly higher.

"Check your chest. Now." My hand flew to my sternum before I was even fully awake. I sucked in a breath. It rattled like a bag of dry gravel. The brand—the jagged 'X'—didn't just glow anymore. The skin around it had turned a sick, necrotic purple. Black veins branched out from the center, crawling toward my collarbone like ink dropped in water. It pulsed. A low, wet throb that made my vision swim with static.

Slowly, I tilt my head, my eyes focusing on the strange, beautiful pattern now etched into my skin. It’s not just a faint bruise anymore; it’s something more. The mark has grown bolder, its fiery pattern glowing against my skin. Tendrils of flame, rich and molten gold, curl and intertwine, creating an intricate design that seems to pulse with its own light. I can almost feel the warmth radiating from it, as if my skin had been kissed by fire. The flames seem alive, dancing with a mesmerizing energy that draws me in, making it impossible to look away.

She finished. "What do you mean by a comprehensive check?" I queried. " I need to check every inch of her skin, for signs of a puncture. If it is what I think it is, then the puncture would have black veins running from it, by now. The black veins would be as tiny as threads for a needle and not as visible as normal black veins should be. Because this is the early stages." She explained. " What do you think this is?" " I think it's a blood enchantment."
