Caitlin ran. A huge, blood-red sun sat on the horizon, and she ran right for it, through a field of mud. She looked down, and saw that the field was alive, and was completely blanketed with rats. Thousands and thousands of rats squealed as she ran through them, and as she did, she saw fleas jumping off of them in every direction. A swarm of fleas hovered in the air, and they climbed up and down her legs, covering her entire body, biting her like crazy. She felt her skin on fire from all the bites; she swatted them, but she couldn’t get them off.

I called out to the woman who was circling around the glass incubator and admiring the new creature. “What is it, Cara?” “I remember there was another small lab built with the MRI lab. The one that can isolate radiation…” That was the one I asked for when I first came here, wanting to do a comparative experiment. Alice was worried that I would harm Mason, so she made the lab very small. So small that I couldn’t even fit in if I crouched down. “Yes, it’s behind you,” Claire said without looking back. She seemed completely fascinated by the creature.

'Being a manager of a research lab seems like a tough job. Molly thought as she promised herself to make Sean proud. When she got the notice, she immediately went to the research lab and took a tour. All the equipment that she ordered previously was delivered and placed in the location she wanted. The lab had everything it needed now, so it could start operating at anytime. Next, it was time to get somebody to get the lab running. Molly gave a call to her first candidate, Caitlyn, to ask her to join the lab. As expected, Caitlyn agreed right away.

He grabbed a neutralizing spray and doused the cage in a cloud of thick, white mist. The violet light in the rat's eyes flickered and died. Subject 42 slumped back onto all fours, its fur returning to a dull white. It blinked, let out a normal, pathetic squeak, and began to groom its tail as if it hadn't just dismantled the social lives of half the room. The lab was in chaos. Students were whispering, crying, or staring at Thorne with newfound suspicion. Thorne himself looked like he was about to have a stroke.

I answered. Miss Caitlin yawned in exhaustion and then walked past me. On a normal day, she would have given me so much grief but she was so worn out from dealing with the plague, she didn’t even have time for me. I ran upstairs to my room and changed into something else, no time for a bath, a lot was on the line. As soon as I came downstairs, I ran to the supply room and took a fresh white coat, gloves and hair net but as I left, I didn’t go to the left wing right away, I made a detour to the lab.

Caitlin shot me one more glare and stormed out of the barn. Bill shook his head. "She reminds me so much of her mother when she was young. I didn't think I would ever tame Colleen." At supper that night we were joined by Caitlin. She sat next to Sam on the opposite side of the table from me. She gave me another sharp look when I came into the kitchen. I waited until everyone had filled their plates before speaking. "Your mother tells me that you have finished your doctorate in veterinary medicine," I said in a pleasant voice.

"Caitlin has him in her room, don't change the subject." She folded the same shirt for the third or fourth time and I knew what kind of mood she was in. A houseful of kids meant I couldn't fuck her out of her shit, but what's new? Ever since she started trying to repopulate the state I haven't had a moment's peace. "So, that whole situation, they were just experimenting, nothing for you to get bent about. I told them to put the brakes on so you don't have to worry." "What about that poor girl?" Poor girl my ass.

Then she wailed in pain, for the hand she’d stitched a grid into was gone, and rats were pouring out from her wrist. It was instant madness. Rats were everywhere, crawling from all sides of the circle, across the floor, digging through books. They all had oversized, all-too-human grins. They went straight for Mr. Pervis, nipping at his ears and fingers. He brushed them away, stomped them with his boots, squished them in his fists. All the while, Loretta wailed in pain.

Stefano would not, would he? Lilliana moves expertly through the maze of tunnels. She leads us down one floor and I immediately know we are heading towards the kitchen. There are rats that run along the electrical wire paths by our feet. These rats look like and entirely different species to the ones you find in the city. They are enormous and their fur looks blacker and their eyes wilder. I step carefully, making sure not to disturb them. “If we do not come right with food, you can always eat one of those” Lilliana jokes.

We watch as two figures walk in through the door, one of them cackling like a vulture, while the other snorts. “Sooo.” Caitlyn's gleeful voice says, as she walks closer to our new home away from home. “You are not as clever as you thought you were, huh. The little bitches caught like the dogs they are.” She gloats, and I can’t help but roll my eyes. “You keep thinking that.” I tell her, sitting down, cross legged. Tabatha does the same, sporting an extremely bored expression. Caitlyn comes closer to the bars.
