The old man stepped forward, now closer with a commanding presence. “The throne recognizes balance.” He paused, letting his words sink. “This cannot be happening.” I shook my head slowly, disbelief clouding my thoughts. The old man's eyes then darkened, his voice dropping already, “If they do not ascend the throne, there will be calamity.” Huh, what?!!!! Calamities? The words settled heavily in my chest… “Calamity?” A council elder asked, his voice unsteady. “Yes.” The old man nodded at once. “There would be division among the people, hunger, bloodshed. The story will be that of a kingdom devouring itself.”
