“I get it. It’s so late, and Samantha’s home alone. She’ll be scared. I’m fine, Shawn. Go back to her. I’ll get home on my own.”
As soon as she said that, Shawn’s eyes flickered with hesitation.
He bent down and picked up Jenna, who was drunk, in his arms.
“What danger could she be in? It’s not safe for a girl like you to go home alone. I’ll take you back.”
I hovered above them and watched as Jenna nestled into his arms.
From where Shawn could not see, her lips curled into a victorious smile.
My heart was already shattered. The pain was almost numb now.
Every time I worked late and called Shawn to pick me up, he would always say, “You’ll be fine, there’s no danger. Just take a cab home.”
