"You're going to be fine, My miracle, I will never lose you." The distant sound of my heartbeat slowly made its way into my subconsciousness, bringing my mind back to life. I listened carefully to the heartbeat, following the sound. The beating slowly turned to a beeping, a machinery beeping. It increased with every step closer I got to the location of the sound until I snapped my eyes open with a gasp. Damn.

he instructed as he let go of my face and I frowned, wondering what the point of it was. I placed my head on his chest and closed my eyes, just to get it over with. I expected to hear the usual heart beating and the sound of his breath. Yet, when I leaned in, his chest did not move even a lone inch and I placed my ear to the left of his chest, wondering where his heart beat could be. I scoffed at my lack of common sense, there is certainly no way that any person would not have a heartbeat, "what do you hear, my Aphrodite?" I turned my face and listened with my other ear.

"Mon Fleur," he breathed, "Can you hear it?” He asked and my frown depended even more. “Heartbeats.” He muttered softly, still pressing his ear to my stomach. Though the room reigned with silence, I could hear my heart pounding loudly. “It's faint,” There was a puzzled and amused look on his face. “But if you listen closer, you'll hear it. I can hear them. Heartbeats. Fuck!” He cursed breathlessly, lifting his head from my stomach.

She turns to me smiling. "Everything is okay Mr Hale. Apart from the bruises on her face, she is fine." I am too shocked to respond. I guess I haven't gotten used to the idea of being a father. Aella is equally quiet, she has refused to look at me since I came in. "Let me show you something." Aella and I look at the monitor of the machine immediately. I am too stunned to speak, too overwhelmed to breathe. I let go of Aella's hands, moving closer to the screen. It is my child's heartbeat, and it is perfect.

Like I’m hearing it from somewhere far away. All I see is her. Her face. The way her lips move. The slight crease between her brows. My heart starts to pound. Slow at first. Then faster. Then Louder. This isn’t normal. No… this can’t be. I clench my fist, trying to steady myself, but it only makes it worse. The sound of my heartbeat fills my ears. “Sir Rayner? I remembered and I began to try to calm my heartbeat. 'Beat normally you damn heart!' I scolded my heart, but no, it wouldn't listen. It was surely the most deaf, dumb, and blind part of my body.

I asked. “I doubt little one, but something doesn’t feel right….” Then I heard it. A second heartbeat. I froze. It was soft, faint—but unmistakable. I blinked, pressing a hand to my chest, then lower... my stomach. Was this possible… My breath hitched. I closed my eyes, listening again. Thump-thump... thump-thump. Tears flooded my eyes. I wasn’t alone. I placed my trembling hand over my abdomen, a sob escaping my lips. The heartbeat, it wasn’t mine. It was smaller, but I just knew it somehow.

My eyebrows pull together when I focus too hard and hear his heartbeat too. ‘ It’s normal for us. ’ The voice whispers in my mind, making me suck on my lower lip. “ I don’t think you need this comforting shit. You need some facts straight. ” Ryker scowls all of a sudden. I purse my lips, listening in to his heartbeat. Does his heart ever beats fast? Ever misses a beat? Ever flutters? Like mine? It’s the most ridiculous time to be thinking about this to my annoyance but I can’t really help it when I can finally hear the sound of his heartbeat — the rich ba-dum kinda shit — and even his breaths, even and calm.

Cain asks questions after questions as his front presses against my back in an attempt to know what made me feel like this. “ Can you…” I gulp, my eyes staring right into his silver grey orbs. “ Can you hear this? ” A frown appears on his forehead, his ears perking up. “ Hear wh - ” He is halfway through the sentence when his eyes turn saucer wide. “ A heartbeat. ” I whisper, tears beginning to pour down my eyes once more. How did I miss this? How didn’t I realise this?” Before I can place my hand over my stomach, Cain beats me to this and places his hand over my stomach.

I nodded slightly and tried to relax again. I heard a dull pounding noise coming from the little tv screen. “Is that the heartbeat?” I asked, incredulously. The doctor smiled, “it is. The heartbeat is strong. Perfect. Now let’s take a look.” He moved the wand around, pressing it further into my stomach. An image flashed up on the small screen. “Oh, my goodness.” I whispered in awe.
