I followed instinctively, ready to vanish, but Serena’s voice stopped me.
“Can we talk? Alone?”
I almost refused, but I caught Mara’s warning look from across the hall. With a sigh, I nodded. “Fine.”
We walked out to the poolside, and Serena perched on the edge of a lounge chair, twirling her fingers in her hair.
“I can’t believe we’re getting married,” she said softly, watching me. “Me, a Valenti, becoming a Rivers. Your father must be thrilled.”
“Biggest mistake of his life,” I muttered dryly.
