Barry said quietly one afternoon, nudging Randy’s elbow as they sat on the low wall near the arts building.
Randy blinked. “I wasn’t.”
Barry gave him a look that suggested he’d stop arguing if Randy stopped lying.
“It’s different now,” Barry went on. “You see that, right?”
Randy exhaled slowly. “I don’t know what I see anymore.”
That was the truth,his emotions had shifted, rearranged themselves into something less selfish, more frightening,he didn’t want Carlson’s attention stolen.
He wanted Carlson safe, grounded, honest,he wanted him unburdened, but the realization unsettled him.
