After a brief moment of hesitation, he held out the sugar figurine to Carissa with an air of generosity and obedience.

I cross the street, my eyes still darting around, looking for any clue, any sign that this wasn't a wasted trip. As I step inside the Candy Corner, the bell above the door jingles, a surprisingly cheerful sound. The air inside is thick with the sweet, cloying smell of sugar and something vaguely fruity. Shelves are crammed with colorful packets of sweets, old-fashioned jars of hard candies, and a small, dusty display of newspapers.

Peering over the tops of their heads, Allen too peeked at what had captured their interest. The window displaying vibrant mounds of sweets, bouquets of lollipops, and meandering cords of licorice, the exuberant sight helped to him forget some of his previous musings. His eyes roaming over the offerings of the window. Allen smiled as he recognized a modest pink candy amongst them.

He braced for it. "I don't have any points," she said, the words clipped and final. He didn't ask why. He just ducked his head, accessing his mental interface with trembling focus. He never let her rest for a minute until she passed out. Wait, she passed out?!! Candy's eyes widened with shock. Oh no! Diego had warned her not to pass out, and she did. She got down from the bed feeling sore down there. After dragging herself to the bathroom, she freshened up and drew out a cozy dress from the wardrobe, likely prepared by Diego. Heading downstairs, she found the house empty—Diego must have already left for work. Her hungry stomach led her to the fridge, revealing a surprising lack of food.
