As Ophelia stumbled to the table, Jude stepped into her path. He cooed, “You think I go into the forest and what? Hunt Bambi and his family? Silly dove.” Eyes of liquid silver turned to pools of ink and tar. “I don’t kill animals. I kill people.”

My chest felt like something ancient had curled up inside it, waiting. Then Jude appeared. Not walking. Not opening doors. Just there. His eyes were full black. His skin brighter than bone. He looked older than I had ever seen him. Not in age. In energy. He reached out a hand. "You shouldn’t be here." I tried to speak, but no words came. "You're not ready to see it." Another flash.
