Excerpt – Chapter One (Draft) Her name was Mara. She taught English. She liked coffee in paper cups and walks before sunrise. She got pregnant. He left. But she didn’t disappear. She stood on her porch and screamed her name into the morning air until someone wrote it down. Carrie’s POV When River told the publisher they wanted to write fiction, there was a pause. Then a reply. “We didn’t expect this direction. But if it’s what you need to tell the story, we’re interested. Please submit a partial.” River smiled when they read that.

That was a moan, a loud one at it, she had thought her mind was deceiving her. "But how?" Her brows pulled up in confusion. That was a moan, but there were no male servants around here. That must be a stranger; her heart skipped at the thought. A stranger. How? She exhaled fearfully before pulling a little courage in her and walking towards the sound. She halted on her feet at the sight displayed in front, her eyes almost popped out. She quickly hid behind a tree as she watched the new maid called Carina, with her skirt down as 'she' fucked a maid she knew as Maria in a bush.

The flames blazed on, intense and untamed, burning bright against the white landscape. I had no idea what else to do, but I kept piling snow onto her, desperate to quench the flames that seemed unstoppable. Finally, after a minute that felt like a lifetime, the fire sputtered out. Scarlett lay there, her body still and vulnerable. Her skin glowed faintly, as if some otherworldly energy had just released her, and after a few heartbeats, she began to stir, slowly coming back to herself.

But she let me take her hand and hold it while we both sat there, watching the cat flip and curl in her lap, nosing at her hand, his purr filling the room with a pleasant rumble. “Are you okay?” I asked her a minute later. She nodded, but didn’t look up from Beans. “I’m just trying to… to keep it all straight in my head. Can I… can I ask you… to make sure I remember? That it wasn’t a dream?” “Of course.” Cara blew out a breath and stroked Beans’ head. “So, um, I followed you guys into the forest. And everyone was, um, naked. And Charlie… Charlie…”

I started to say, but Carla cut me off. “Is it the cabin you offered the newlyweds?” Carla asked. “The one they turned down because they wanted our beach house in Florida?” She smiled at Aunt Linda, but it wasn't a kind smile. She turned back to Freddie. “I adore our beach house. We were going to go there after the wedding, but I gave it to my son because he deserves the best.”

Nate is also unusually quiet, now the lull in conversation has happened on the long flight; he is watching my girl unusually intensely though and probably planning his seduction if I know him. Since meeting the Carrero men Jenny has been giggling and blushing a lot, although a heck of a lot more since Nate sat down. She isn’t immune to them the way I am and has just fallen victim, like every other female in New York, to that old Carrero charm, and good genes. Sadly, also to that wolf-like skill Nate has of entrapping innocent souls. I try not to glare at him.

"I don't know. I just thought I'd try a long book for a change." "Hey, I just remembered something," Caroline said. "This is funny. When I was in sixth grade, one time I read a really long book, the longest one in the class. Is this for one of Ms. Reeds' famous book reports? Mine was, too. What was it? That's right, The Yearling. It was a great book. A really great book. If you do another long book, read The Yearling." Caroline read The Yearling in sixth grade? Jane hadn't heard of the book until she was in high school.

Carrie yelled, letting go of the vines. She flew through the air, her hair creating a chocolatey floating mass around her head. Then she disappeared under the water, only to reappear in my outstretched arms. "This is the second time, are you going to count down each time you jump?" Her chin jutted out, "of course." Carrie was glaring at me playfully, her thick chocolate waves heavy and soaking down her sides as I held her. "Much better," I said, inspecting her face.

The book he, her old bestie had bought for her. It was a simple gift for her 14th birthday, 10 years ago. It was the last birthday he had spent with her. Or rather, the last day. He left her a small note that she noticed a few hours after his family had left. They were celebrating her birthday with her family as they were like one family. Carmen never used to like diary books and thought that they were stupid, reminding you of the reality you want to escape from.
