Feeling the cold grip on my lungs I freed my hands and pushed off the lake bed and swam back up as fast as I could. Gasping as I broke the surface, I climbed into the boat with cold clumsy movements. I dressed as quickly as I could, unable to stop shivering, and rowed back to shore.

I swim like a pro, can hold my breath for a long time, and hide either under the bridge or somewhere among the reeds. Or at least, I can try. I spot a good place to jump and prepare to dive in, when suddenly I’m flipped in midair. A huge black beast pins me to the ground right in front of the calm water.

His hand trembled as he knelt, dipping his fingers into the icy water. A shock traveled up his arm, his heart jolting. The river whispered low, haunting, like a thousand voices speaking at once. He gasped, jerking his hand back, but not before he saw it. A shape beneath the water. A book. Black, pulsing faintly with veins of crimson, as though it breathed. Elowen's breath caught, her eyes wide with awe and fear. "The book…" Jackson stumbled forward, peering over Donato's shoulder. "Is that really it? Just lying there?"

Asher has Jackson. I can see them both, but they're getting farther away as the yacht continues to speed through the water. "Emmeline, no!" Elias shouts from behind me.
