“I would love to see your drawing.”
She scrambled off my lap and ran to grab her sketchbook from the side table, completely unafraid, completely trusting of a man she’d only just met minutes earlier. She sat down next to him on the floor, showing him page after page of crayon drawings, explaining each one with the kind of detailed seriousness only small children bring to their art.
“This one’s a cat, but it looks kind of like a dog because I made the ears wrong.”
“I think it looks like a very handsome cat,” Cole said, studying the drawing like it deserved genuine consideration.
