The little black cat curled up in her lap as usual. "Tonight we find out the real skinny on this, kitty," she murmured as she opened the heavy book to the page she had marked. "I don't even know what I'm looking for any more but I hope I find it soon." She opened the book to the place she'd marked, two pages of hand-drawn sketches. One of the drawings especially caught her eye. The face of the wolf looked almost human and she had the bizarre feeling the animal was staring out at her from the page.

Meow. Dante turned his attention to the balcony, spotting a silhouette of a feline pawing at the door. Confused and curious, he opened the curtain to find a calico cat staring up at him expectingly. Unsure of what to make of it, he closed the curtain on the cat and went back to sit down when it pawed at the door again. This time a bit more insistently. When he opened the curtain once more, the cat simply cocked its head at him. He opened the door and the cat bolted in and stood near the fireplace, shaking its fur.

Its fur was a stunning shade of gold, speckled with dark splotches. Rayna leaped on the animal without a second thought, sinking our teeth into its hide as we tossed it to the side. The cat slammed against the base of a tree, and I watched as the tree shuddered and groaned. The cat shook itself off, it’s almond shaped eyes narrowing with intelligence. The cat made this garbled whining sound before crouching low and pouncing. I had time to make out each razor-sharp tooth that protruded from its mouth, along with the thick, sharp claws that jutted out from its feet.

Katrina just laughed, a high-pitched, irritating sound. I knew I had to play it smart. The sketchbook contained the drawing of the wolf, and I definitely didn’t want Katrina and her cronies to see it. It was too much to explain. I reluctantly sat back down, knowing I had to play along for now. Katrina had won this round, but I wasn’t going to make it easy for her.

A piece of paper fluttered out. It was a drawing. Crayons on construction paper. Catherine picked it up, and her blood ran cold. The drawing showed two stick figures standing on a jagged white line (the ice). One was labelled "Daddy," drawn in blue. The other was labelled "Sad Man," drawn in red. They were fighting. But above them, the sky was ripped open. A black hole was drawn in the clouds. And coming out of the hole wasn't light. It was a tentacle. A massive, black, spiraling limb covered in eyes.

I froze at the door, my pulse hammering. Rita. My children. Ashton. And none of them even realized how out of place this was. Ashton glanced up then, and his eyes caught mine. She then crouched down, grabbed a silver cat who had been accompanying her. "Good boy," She said while stroking the cat's head with a smile that would dazzle the people who saw it.
