My fire snarled, clawing at the inside of my veins, desperate to answer him, to join him.
“No,” I spat, wrenching my wrist back. My flames exploded outward, a sphere of heat that scorched the trees into black husks.
He staggered, cloak smoking, but he didn’t fall. His smile widened, teeth white in the flames. “Every flare only proves me right. You can’t burn me away—I am your fire.”
The words pierced me.
No. No, he couldn’t be. Catter’s blade broke, sparks fell. She cursed, pulling out her second dagger, refusing to back down. “Get your damned hands off her!”
