when she was staring at me she wasn't looking at me but behind me. A world that's burning in fire and half destroyed, screams from the people running away. “You’re scaring me.” I looked over at Jack. He was half-reaching for me, a look of panic on his face. “Help me up.” He closed the distance between us and carefully pulled me into a sitting position. Blood marred my naked skin, but that didn’t seem to bother him. He let me lean my full weight against his chest as I stared around at the decimated street. Celeste stood in the middle of it all, wind darting through her brown fur. Around her, the fighting continued, though no one seemed to go for her. A ripple of power lanced through the air and the ground rumbled beneath me.

Amara was the first to get out of the elevators, purring something about the empyrean architecture of the building, before floating towards a group of angels in the corner, talking animatedly with them. Minho rolled his eyes. Amara was vicious in fighting demons, but he found her distractibility unpleasant. Not for the first time, he thought about asking for another partner.

CELESTE He reached inside and flipped a switch. Soft amber light filled the room. It was his bedroom. The space was large but intimate—dark wood, a fireplace, a bed that seemed to take up half the room. The sheets were black, the pillows piled high. The windows faced the garden, moonlight spilling through the glass. He led me to the bed and stopped beside it, turning to face me. "One more time," he said. "If you want to stop, tell me.
