Serena had just slipped into her room when the knock came at her door and one of the senior female betas June entered followed by two omegas. June held a small golden chalice in her hand. “What is that?” Serena asked. “The Alpha has sent some sedatives to calm your nerves during the ceremony. It would only last for thirty minutes. You can drink it right before the walk to the Ceremonial Circle.” June replied. “Thank you, you can keep it on the table.”

Book One: Family Magic I batted at the curl of smoke drifting off the tip of my candle and tried not to sneeze. My heavy velvet cloak fell in oppressive, suffocating folds in the closed space of the ceremony chamber, the cowl trapping the annoying bits of puff I missed. I hated the way my eyes burned and teared, an almost constant distraction. Not that I didn't welcome the distraction, to be honest. Anything to take my mind from what went on around me.

“Functionally an instruction. Yes, Beta.” I hid a smirk. Serena had thrown herself into the preparations with her usual sharp precision. Her opinions on ceremony structure arrived like edicts wrapped in velvet. She argued for ancient runes etched into the central dais, for specific lunar alignments in the timing, and for Liora to be presented in a carrier woven with threads from both Voss and Argent colors. Most of her ideas were excellent. I let her run with them.

The chat breaks in a while, as dot at six in the evening, the Master of Ceremonies addresses the gathering. “Alright! So here we are! Ladies and Gentlemen, on behalf of the Man Booker Group, I welcome all of you to this edition of the ceremony, to celebrate some of the finest works of fiction produced in recent times in the English language, to share the incredible success stories of their authors. It’s a rare privilege to host a ceremony of this kind, and I thank the organizers for this opportunity.”

I felt like an imposter in a storybook, caught up in a tale that wasn’t truly mine. "Serena, this will be the most magnificent ceremony," Cervine, a she-wolf with kind eyes and a gentle demeanor, gushed as she clasped my hands. "We will bring the best flowers, fresh fruit, and taffeta. Oh, and meat! We will exchange preys to get the best cuts." I forced a smile, nodding in agreement. "Thank you, Cervine. It means a lot to us." As the villagers dispersed, their cheerful chatter gradually fading into the distance, Baird and I were left standing alone in the middle of his rustic cottage.

She crossed her arms and muttered, “Where’s the book?” Serena was slightly taken aback, her mind taking time to process the other fae’s request. Her lips parted. “What book?” Amie rolled her eyes and leaned forward. Her beady gaze glimmered. “The Book of Ancient Magic. Queen’s orders. Give it now if you want to face consequences.” Serena’s baffled look made Amie’s lips quirk. “You think I will let you go? If you think you were ever my friend-”

Their discussion interrupted by an ominous booming voice from overhead. Allen took one more perturbed glance at Chiri, before slipping the trinket she had given him into a suit pocket. The voice announcing that the Blessing Ceremony was about to commence, they both made their way towards the raised platform at the front of the banquet hall. Leora replied with a smile. "Here you choose which concept," said Rumi handing over a book containing some wedding party concepts, which Rumi got from the wedding organizer. "Em .., can I ask for something?" Leora asked carefully.

She glanced at me, as if for permission. “Go on,” I said. “Have fun.” Nearby I saw the nanny coming up onto the deck. Elva saw her too, and ran toward her, holding up the folded bird. With Elva thoroughly distracted, I turned to Veronica, looking for an explanation. “What just happened?” Veronica took a breath. “That magic ‘trick’ was actually an incantation I read about in this book.” She motioned toward the merfolk book on the top of the bar. “The book contains many sections on curses and how to properly evaluate and remove them.”
