I couldn't even see my hands in front of my face, and it was really dark. Even though I tried really hard, I could only see a little bit inside the carriage. There were torches along the way, and it seemed like we were going through a spooky forest. The light made long, weird shadows of trees and rocks.

John probed gently, wanting to understand the tale hidden behind those haunted eyes. The girl suddenly looked up, her dark eyes meeting John's as she started her story. "The campsite had been unattended for almost two days," she began, her voice tinged with exhaustion. "I thought someone had abandoned it, and I was desperate. I've been running for days. A pack of wolves attacked the village that my skulk and I were a part of. They were searching for something or someone," she explained, her voice filled with trepidation. "My mama managed to communicate through the link, urging me to hide and run," she finished, a hint of unshed tears glistening in her eyes.
