His Straight Pet
The crowd roared for him, but my stomach twisted.
Then I saw it.
When he spun, his cloak flared wide—and beneath it, for the briefest instant, I saw something glimmer. A shard of obsidian, etched with blood-red lines, pressed close to his skin. Not a weapon, not quite—but a talisman.
My chest tightened.
He was using magic. Dark magic.
The rules of the Cullings were strict. No Lord could allow their champion to use such aids. The fight was meant to prove raw strength, loyalty, bloodline. But here it was, right before me, and not one of the Lords spoke a word.
