There was a photograph on the north wall shelf. Daniel had put it there in September, between Catherine's annotated mathematics text and the volume of architectural theory that Adrian had given him in the second year with a note that said only: read chapter seven. He had read chapter seven. He had read the whole book. The note was still in it, pressed between the pages of the chapter it had indicated, which was a chapter about the relationship between the structure of a building and the structure of a life, the two as analogous practices rather than separate disciplines.

She led me to a long table with a chair in the middle and millions of Times Magazine copies stacked nearby. I smiled and gave a slight wave at the people inside the library and took my seat on the chair.
