I wasn’t sure what to make of Zayne Novak. He was self-assured, pompous, and clearly felt some sort of animosity towards his father. The little tip he gave us about Soul Eaters wasn’t exactly for our benefit. What would happen if I was a soul eater? I’m sure the chances of a bright future would dim under that revelation. “Do you know Zayne or something? You seemed like you were about to explode the entire time.” I asked, stepping into his arms and smiling when his anger ebbed.

Laila was forced back three steps, her boots leaving deep ruts in the gravel, her arms vibrating with a dull, sickening numbness that she hadn't felt since the Bank of England. Takashi didn't give her a second to recover. He lunged forward, his long naginata slicing through the air in a horizontal cut aimed directly at her unprotected throat. The steel blade was no longer humming with a blue electrical current; it was coated in a thick, oily black smoke that carried the unmistakable, suffocating clicking sound of the First Soul Eater.

When it spoke, its voice was layered — thousands of tones speaking in perfect unison. “Why do you descend?” The reapers froze. The sound wasn’t heard so much as felt, vibrating through bone and thought alike. Veyra stepped forward, keeping her tone steady. “We seek the ones who stirred you.” “The Soulbound.” “Yes,” she said cautiously. “You know them.” The figure tilted its head. “Know? I remember them.” The walls trembled, and golden veins flared brighter. Soreth’s grip on his weapon tightened. “Where are they?” Veyra demanded.
