Ashley
I had arrived in Manhattan a week before to get to know the place l was going to start living in.
I had learned everything I needed to know about Owens and the person who ran it and was sure I wouldn't be in dark about anything.
Today was my interview as Jake Owens's personal bodyguard, more like a babysitter. I hoped what I had provided in my CV was more than enough. I still couldn't believe I was going to be working on this mission.
I had known that the master was cruel but this was out of it, I didn't even know the man existed until a week ago. I still remembered how shocked I was when I found out what my mission would be.
"You can't be serious about this mission master. You know this is a hard limit for me!"I had slammed my hand on his desk in an outburst which he seemed to find amusing. He knew this was going to get a reaction from me but I didn't care about that at the moment.
"Control yourself, Ashley. You would need those hands for your mission unless you want another person to go in your place."He had said in a calm and collected tone as if he was merely discussing the weather and not the matter of my sanity.
He knew his actions had gotten to me when I had fallen back into my seat suddenly drained of strength.I couldn't allow anyone else to go in my place even when I knew I could have chosen the easy way out but I had always known there would never be an easy way for me in life and I had learned to accept it.
I didn't know he existed until that moment and now I had to end him with my hands, maybe this was how my life was meant to be, full of endless suffering. Suddenly I knew what I had to do and I looked up with resolve.
" No. You don't need to replace me, I will take the mission." He nodded and smiled.
"That should have been your first reply instead of the tantrum you displayed like a child. Now go ahead and prepare for the job and don't do anything stupid."
I nodded as I stood up to take my leave. I wasn't going to do anything stupid I was going to complete the mission and that would also be my last mission because, after the mission, I was going to pay for my sins.
I was going to end my life. I schooled my face to reveal no emotion and walked towards the receptionist at the front desk."Hello there, I'm Elena Davis. I'm here for an interview."
I said with a tight smile."Elena Davis, you're to go to the fourth floor." The receptionist replied with a smile after checking through her appointment file.
"Thank you." I took the lift to the fourth floor and met with the secretary who directed me to the personal assistant's office.
I knocked on the door and went in. A woman looked up from behind her desk and looked up with a smile.
"Miss Davis?" The woman inquired.
"Just Elena please," I replied.
"Well Elena has a seat and you can call me Celine." The woman gestured to one of the two chairs in front of the desk.
" I applied for a job here and I'm here for an interview." I winced a little. Of course, she knew you're here for an interview, how else did she know your name?
As if sensing my dilemma she smiled and nodded.
" Yes, of course, we have your file here and it says that you've worked for several companies and that you're competent enough for this job."
"That's right." It's amazing what kind of string you can pull when you're in my line of work.
"If I may ask, why you don't work for any security company in particular?"
"That's because I like to work at my pace."
"Okay then, what do you think are your strength in this job?"" I don't know if you've read through my file but you would have found that I'm experienced in all sectors of this job. If I'm being candid I might say I'm one of the best out there." She looked up at that a smile playing on her lips, I knew I had her then. This job is mine.
"Okay, since we cleared that up that would be the end of the interview. We'll get back to you." I nodded and stood to walk out of the office. That was pretty easy, I thought to myself. I had half expected for me to be called out.As I turned the corner that led to where I was going to board the lift, I bumped into a hard wall and lost my balance.
I prepared myself for the inevitable fall but was surprised to be held up. I realized someone was holding me up and I quickly stood upright and looked up to thank the person. I froze when I recognized who I'd bumped into.
It was him.Jake Owen.
JAKE
I looked at the woman in front of me looking as if she'd seen a ghost. I could have sworn I'd seen her somewhere before but I couldn't place my fingers on where exactly.
She stayed that way for a moment before she sprang back as if she was suddenly electrocuted.
It was as if she was afraid of me one second and she couldn't wait to get away and the other second, it felt as if she was shocked to see me.
" I - I'm sorry." She cringed and practically disappeared from my sight because I had never seen a woman walk that fast away from me before. Instead, they seem to cling to me like bees to honey.
JakeI ran a hand over my face to check if something was stuck there but came up with nothing. Then I realized that she just came through the path that leads to only Celina's office. Well then maybe I'd get some answers from her. I was on my way to her office before that woman ran into me." Mike says he needed the file concerning the accident and I thought I would just tell you myself instead of using the intercom."I said as I went into Celina's office and took a sit. She didn't bother to look up from whatever she was doing. I guess someone was used to me barging into their office." I will get to that Jake. You didn't need to trouble yourself by coming here." She said barely sparing me a glance making me sigh."I'm sorry about not being more careful but you know I have to give this my all Celine," I said running my hands through my hair making them messy. She finally looked up and just stared at me before sh
JakeI turned my head towards the woman standing in front of me. Did she just snap at me? I looked towards Mike who was looking amused at the situation. Of course, a bodyguard-to-be snaps at me and he finds it entertaining. Typical Mike. " What did you say, Miss Davis?" I turned towards the woman with a frown on my face. She shut her eyes for a second and took a deep breath almost as if she was calming herself. Interesting. " I meant that you should probably attend to me or tell me to come back later. I don't like people ignoring me, Mr. Owens." She replied calmly this time without breaking her gaze from mine. When I continued staring at her without replying Mike joined in on the conversation. "We're sorry for ignoring but I assure you, it wasn't intentional. You can call me Mike, by the way, you'll be seeing more of me if you stick around." He raised his hand for a h
Jake "You what?"She exclaimed furiously. She glared at me before turning to look at Mike who had just come through the door. She then turned back to glare at me without saying anything to Mike. "Do you care to elaborate on what you just said?" She asked calmly, too calmly for my peace of mind. It was like she would attack at any moment if I didn't answer her fast. It was both scary and amusing. " I said I changed my plans for today. We have something else to do and I don't see why you had to ask me that, it wasn't like I owed you an explanation you just had to follow orders given to you because that's what I paid you for." I shrugged uncaringly. One, because my previous security guards didn't have a problem with me changing my plans as I pleased so I didn't see what her problem was. Two, because I secretly liked seeing her riled up not
Jake Elena was listening to what Mike was saying to her attentively. We had finally agreed to be on a neutral level where we weren't always biting each other's head off and I had to admit one of the perks was that I get to hear her call my name. It sounded different when she did in a good way and I liked it but I wasn't telling her that anytime soon. She would probably bite my head off and I didn't want her to start closing up on me again when I just started seeing her good side. "Um, Jake? Care to fill us in on what's making you smile?" Not a chance! I thought and gave them a bored expression. " I own a multi-million dollar company and yet I'm forbidden to smile, just great." Elena laughed softly which made me smile again. Did I mention that she had a beautiful laugh? It was a shame everything we were ever going to have was going to be strictly professional. The thought of that killed my mood a
Ashley Today wasn't going as I planned. I had woken up with a nightmare that had left me screaming. The nightmares had reduced and were less terrifying since I had gotten here and I didn't know why it came this way this morning which wasn't a good omen especially now that I was about to commence with my plan.Wasn't that just nice?Maybe it came to cheer me on I couldn't say but I would take it like that because I won't let anything dampen my mood today. I looked at the outfit I selected just for today and smiled. I was wearing a pair of black pants trousers that enhanced my hips with a blazer and a red vest to compliment my eyes. I agree it was different from my usual shirt and pant outfit and that was the reason I chose it. Jake wouldn't know what hit him when he sees me. I went straight to his office since he had left a message
Ashley Message sent. My phone notified me and I slipped it into my pocket just as Jake and Mike entered the van. We were taking extra security hence the van plus we don't want to draw attention to ourselves if we can help it. " We're ready to move with your permission sir." I said to Jake making him close his eyes in grief. He totally deserved it, I dolled up for him and he calls me a blabbermouth? No way in hell was I not going to take offense to him calling me that even if he didn't outright say it. I wasn't really pissed about the fact that he lied to me about the number of items he slipped into the bleached guy's pocket or that he doesn't trust me but the fact that he insulted my character by calling me a blabbermouth was vexing. I wouldn't be in the position I was now by being loose-lipped, then he would have found out that I had gone back to do a
Ashley My heart had stopped beating for a moment when I saw one of the assailants point his gun towards Jake and I didn't think twice before jumping in front of him to shield him. At first, I didn't feel anything other than relief when I heard his voice which confirmed he was okay until later when we were on our way back did I start to feel a growing stab of pain at my side, I guess the adrenaline from the near-death mission had worn off.I looked down to see a spreading wet patch ad I almost passed out from the pain. I gave out a low groan not wanting to attract attention to myself, I was going to make sure everyone got back safe, and to ensure that, I need everyone to be alert including me in case of any surprises which means I couldn't make anyone panic or anymore stressed.I placed my hand on the wound carefully and applied pressure to slow down the bleeding, you would have thought that after getti
Jake Three days later, Elena still hadn't woken up. The operation had been successful but she had to be put in a medically induced coma because she had lost a lot of blood and was still in the red zone. if they had brought her in any later, it would have been too late to save her thankfully the bullet didn't hit any vital spot and she had been sagacious enough to put pressure on the wound which helped a lot. Jake hadn't left her side since she was brought into the private room he got for her, he had only left to take bathroom breaks when necessary and had ignored mike's plea for him to go home for a few hours at least instead he had made the guy bring clean shirts for him. He had been sleeping on a makeshift bed which wasn't comfortable but he didn't complain, he couldn't. he was supposed to be on that bed or worse in the morgue and this was the only way he shed a little bit of his guilt, he was going to watch over her and make sure she was okay.
