“Do you want me to get you some help? Kelly asked as Ruth climbed into the crowded bed atop her mother. “Uncle Charlie,” she whispered, her hands on either side of her mouth. “And he helped me look for dawfins. We didn’t see any, though.” Kelly looked from Ruth to Meg, puzzled. Meg was staring at the underside of the top bunk again, avoiding eye contact. “Uncle Charlie?” Kelly repeated. “Who is Uncle Charlie?” “I told you,” Ruth sighed over-dramatically. “He is my friend. We looked for dawfins. Then, Aunt Meg came, and he gave me back.”

Dad started to ask, but I held my hand up to quiet him. I went back to sketching the guy as I listened in on their conversation. I was almost done when I figured out that this guy was my mate’s biological father. He was the King of the Lycans. By the time I was done sketching, everybody’s eyes were on me. I slid the paper to Charlie, who took it and, wait…was he smiling? “What is so funny?” I stood up asking him. “My apologies. Your sketch is actually perfect. I know this man and he is…” Charlie’s smile got even larger.

As Max slowly made his way out of the fire, Charlie rose to his feet, holding Anna in his arms. Max stopped his walk just outside the inferno, locking eyes with Charlie and grinning. Charlie noticed that Max’s left eye was encased in fire. ‘I guess, as insane as it is to be able to make fire from nothing, there’s still a limit to his powers.’ Charlie’s face formed a look of grim determination. ‘We’re completely screwed now, but I’m not ready to give up. We have to make it out of this alive.’ For a brief moment, both Charlie and Max froze in their respective places, waiting for each other to make a move.

"If y'all are cooking this cake since childhood then why are you guys bathed in flour?" She questioned the obvious. Charlie gave them a sheepish smile while Finn and Caleb growled at him. "This lunatic here dumped a spoon full of flour on my head." Caleb hissed and Charlie just grinned.

The girls were still brushing blood and ash off their clothes as Charlie calmly waved his fingers and summoned a glowing portal back to pack territory. Exhausted but victorious, the Guardians stepped through, battle-worn but proud. A thick scent of charred magic clung to them, and even Tora looked like she might fall asleep standing up. Charlie, as casual as ever, dusted his sleeves and said, “I’ll let the witch know. Time to send the boys back.” Cheyenne, sprawled across the porch bench with a bottle of water in hand, cracked an eye open. “They better come bearing snacks.”
