It’s early afternoon when I settle beneath a beautiful tree at the park. In spring, this place is breathtaking—full of blooming flowers and a few imported Japanese cherry trees. They’re my favorite. Cherry blossoms have always felt like a symbol of life and new beginnings. Something I needed to see after last night... and this morning’s terrifying— Dream? Is that what it was? A dream? Or a vision of what would’ve happened if I’d waited to call the police?

Flowers have begun to bloom in the trees and bushes all around us. The view from the lookout is incredible. Although this area is beautiful, it’s somewhat remote, meaning Aiden and I are able to enjoy this view alone. We eat some of the light snacks that I brought along and enjoy some sparkling wine – nothing too alcoholic, but just enough to make us giggly.

And those moonlit nights would be even more romantic. Hanging a small lamp under the cherry tree while enjoying the moon was a scene to remember.

The sight was too beautiful to ignore. Even bustling Tokyo looked more welcoming with blooming flowers. But right now, they weren’t in Tokyo. Shingi Fusaya’s hanami event was held in Osaka, and Nishinomaru Park was located within the famous Osaka Castle grounds. Hanami is a traditional Japanese event that happens every spring. It’s more like a picnic in the park, but with the special purpose of enjoying the sight of cherry blossoms in full bloom. It can only be done during the two-week window in spring before the blossoms fall again.

The warriors lean into it, joining with low growls and deep, resonant howls that echo through the trees and mountains. Slowly, almost impossibly, the cold, gray earth beneath our feet begins to change. Tiny green shoots push through the frost-hardened soil, trembling toward the pale light of the waning moon. Flowers, delicate and vibrant, burst open in sudden clusters, painting the blackened battlefield with swaths of color. I breathe in deeply. The air is different, warmer, sweeter. The heavy scent of decay is replaced by the fresh fragrance of damp earth and blooming life. It’s spring.
