Jaxon’s right arm trembles behind me, and I know why now. I can…I can see why. The entire path to the lake is lined with lanterns, glowing soft and warm in the approaching dusk. String lights are woven through the trees all around us, creating this canopy of stars. Tears gather in my eyes, but even that feels frozen in place. They wouldn’t come down. Lucky for me, or ruin my makeup. And the dock…the dock is lit up, straight out of a dream, stretching out over the water. “Jaxon,” I whimper, unable to turn to him. “What…what is this?”

Aislen’s eyes adjusted to the darkness inside the Playroom with supernatural quickness and she smothered her laughter as she saw what Talen had been up to. The bed had been looped with Christmas fairy lights, tinsel, and red bows that held candy canes in place. As they neared, Talen activated the fairly lights so that the room, and its many sordid toys, flashed and flickered in shades of red and green - as did the two men already on the bed.

Videos flood the screen—kids scribbling wishes onto scraps of paper, crumpling them into socks, draping them over mantles. Couples in matching sweaters twirl under strings of lights. Friends dance in the snow, mugs of hot chocolate in hand, laughing at each other’s clumsy steps. Shopkeepers show off rows of wrapped gifts, their smiles bright and perfect. Even strangers on the street wave at each other, the glow of holiday lights reflecting off their scarves and mittens. I swipe, swipe, swipe. Every clip is the same—cheerful, glittering, happy. I toss the phone aside and stare at the ceiling.

The sheets smelled like lavender and linen clean, untouched. I turned over, pulling the blanket tighter around myself. My Kindle sat untouched on the nightstand. Normally I'd lose myself in a book, but tonight, not even words could comfort me. A floorboard creaked somewhere in the hallway. A breath caught in my throat. It could've just been the house settling... or it could've been someone moving. I listened. Nothing. Still, I got up and checked that my door was locked. It was. But before crawling back into bed, I decided to get a glass of water. The cold floor sent chills through the soles of my feet as I walked quietly, doing my best not to make a sound.

The Christmas tree shifts slightly and I catch sight of my red envelope hanging on the tree. Wait! What?? Is this for real? What is my letter doing in Damien's cabin?? I blink my eyes and stare at the tree again and surprisingly I see nothing there. What the fuck!! I see something now and the next minute I don't see it again?? What the fuck is happening?? Just then, the Christmas lights flickers. Damien goes still. “That’s not me,” he says slowly. My pulse jumps. “What do you mean not you? Something strange is happening in your cabin.”

What's going on—" Her words faltered as Damien pressed a button. In an instant, the oppressive darkness was replaced with a breathtaking display of shimmering lights. The scenery before her was magical, like something out of a dream. Majestic archways adorned with twinkling lights stretched as far as her eyes could see. Each arch was intricately designed with delicate white metalwork, interwoven with clusters of vibrant flowers. Fairy lights danced across the vivid blooms, their colors blending into a mesmerizing spectrum. String lights cascaded above them, adding to the enchantment.

Luckily, the subway was just two blocks from the penthouse. The streets were full of frantic last-minute shoppers picking through the already ravaged stores which were closing shortly. Christmas music played through speakers on the streets. Christmas lights glistened and fake snow lined the streets in front of some of the stores. Near the gun store, plastic reindeer, blow up snowman, and an animatronic Jolly old Saint Nick waved and said Ho Ho Ho. It was very fitting tonight of Amber’s attire. Santa called her ass out.

Amidst the festive cheer, Maria found herself enfolded in a cocoon of warmth, her heart momentarily buoyed by the infectious merriment that enveloped the orphanage. Meanwhile, across the ocean, a similar air of merriment infused the crisp wintry night as Asmo sought refuge from the tumult of his surroundings.
