“Christmas is in five days,” I tell Nathan as I take a sip from my hot chocolate. This is my first Christmas with him. I don’t know how I’m going to spend it. I’m excited like a little child and my heart is jumping up and down, but I’m trying to appear composed before him.

We stepped inside. The reception area was fully decorated for Christmas. My aunt Rosa took holiday season more seriously than any human should. A massive Christmas tree stood in the center, covered in warm lights, red bows, and wooden ornaments handmade at the ranch. Real pine garlands hung from the windows. The smell of cinnamon, pine, and fresh cookies filled the air. “MARCO!” Her voice rang behind the counter. She stepped out wearing a red sweater covered in reindeer. “I thought you’d be back only after taking care of the horses!”

Under the Evergreen lay stacks of gifts of all different sized boxes wrapped in colorful, festive wrapping paper. Tinsel hung from the branches that reflected the roaring fire’s light. “Hey, sweet boy,” Sebastian said as he received his morning cuddles. “Morning, Daddy,” he said with a sleepy smile. “Morning, Zhoni and Gramma Rose. Merry Christmas.” “Merry Christmas, muffin,” Rose said with adoration in her voice. She bent and kissed his forehead before heading into the kitchen. “Merry Christmas, Yanaha,” Nizhoni answered smiling.

It had simply grown, the way things grow when you leave enough room. "What's the intention?" Theo asked. Jamie turned to me, her expression fierce and warm at the same time. "That Christmas is happening in this house. Regardless of elder councils or winter gatherings or whatever the wolf world has planned for the twenty-fourth." She fixed me with a look that brooked no argument. "Christmas. Is. Happening." I stared at the tree. I curled up with Chris in his bed as we watched a movie. He’s been worried about me over the past week, which I feel bad about. I hate worrying everyone. Every wall was lined with warm golden garlands, fake snow drifted from hidden vents on the ceiling, and the entire place felt like one magical holiday movie scene—except the kind that hides secrets, tension, and eyes that watched too closely.
