It is currently the 23rd of December meaning it is our last working day of the year. It's a Friday and from Monday our winter holidays are starting and I am over the moon about it. Christmas might just be my favorite time of the year. I can't wait to go back home to Charlotte and spend a couple of days with my dad and my brother. The snow keeps falling, heavy and suffocating. When I finally gather enough courage to walk home, my nerves are shredded. My thoughts got tangled. Midnight sharp. December 24th. Christmas Eve.

Nicholas “Merry Christmas!” shouted a smiling street performer, handing out small candy canes. “No, thank you,” Nicholas Kerstman said, shaking his head as he walked past. “But it's Christmas time! Take one,” the performer urged. “Embrace the season.” Nicholas sighed. Why did Christmas have to come every year? “Sure. Why not?” Nicholas said with a shrug as he took the candy cane into his hand. When he thought the street performer couldn't see him, he threw the candy cane into the nearest trashcan.

Arthur and I join the others in the living room, where a beautiful Christmas tree stands, twinkling with lights and ornaments. We gather around, everyone smiling and chatting, waiting for the clock to strike twelve. There’s a sense of anticipation, and I can feel Arthur’s hand tighten around mine. Finally, the clock strikes midnight, and a cheer goes up. “Merry Christmas!” everyone calls out, exchanging hugs and kisses. Gifts are passed around, and the room fills with laughter and joy. After the gifts are exchanged, we all raise our glasses for a toast. Arthur’s father, a kind man with a twinkle in his eye, leads the toast.

Christmas was looming, yet somehow, it didn't feel quite as festively joyful as it had other years. "I told you," I muttered, not turning around. "I'm fine. Just. it's a lot. The holidays. Everything. Hazel, the house. Your mom." Jaxon let out a deep sigh as he stepped inside and carefully closed the door behind him. "I understand. It's a lot for you." A beat later, he strolled over to where I was standing, his voice now low. "I want you to know, though, that I'm not doing this to make anything harder. I just want to give Hazel the best Christmas possible.

I looked once more at my princess lying on the cold bed, I felt every inch of my body shudder with rage and fury. Exit the hospital towards the parking lot. I got into my car and left on a painful and sad path of homesickness. As I drove, I felt my muscles rotting as if a virus had taken over everything. I parked near the shore and started walking. It was already dark and the lights from the buildings adorned the city, like decorations on a Christmas tree. My Christmas miracle. What did my father mean by that?

[Christmas] One year later... (Phone ringing) I was in the middle of my sleep when the phone beside me suddenly ring. I took it under my pillow and answer the call without opening my drowsy eyes. "Hello. Christmas speaking, how may I help you?" I started. "Christmas! Don't tell me you are still sleeping?"
