Wynne's POV When I woke up in the hospital, Christmas was already over. A whole day gone. Bernard sat beside my bed, eyes swollen like he hadn't slept. My throat felt raw. "Bernard... I'm sorry. I made you run all over the place for me. I even wrecked your Christmas." He brushed a hand through my hair. His eyes reddened again. "Silly girl. I found you." He shook his head. "That makes this the best Christmas I've ever had."

Christmas was going to be a disaster. And maybe… something much worse.

Roth has heard a lot of jokes like this from him over the years, enough to be entertained instead of being insulted. Do you want me to remind you of how finding a mate works, V? Or should I just give you a mental recording with the right amount of sarcasm? "Well, bah humbug to you too, Roth. I just can't believe this is the 32nd Christmas that we won't be having anyone celebrating the holidays. I was hoping you've already made up your mind by now." When I find her scent, you will be the first to know. Meanwhile, it's bah humbug to you too, Vince. So, are you going to continue working as you usually do, or go home and rest, which I know you dislike at this time

"Never say never. Who knows…" Gosh, she was truly hopeless! Not wanting to listen to her nonsense anymore, I ended the call. Later events proved I shouldn't have done that. At least then I could have prepared myself for what was to come. … After the Christmas break, Louis and I both returned to work. The first morning rush after the holidays always resulted in unusually congested traffic. To make matters worse, I seemed to get caught at every red light possible. The trip that usually took no more than half an hour ended up taking me almost 50 minutes.

When Noah Levine came back, Christmas had already passed. I'd thrown that reindeer lingerie into a street trash bin. "Babe, I left in such a rush last night that I forgot to give you your Christmas present." He pulled out a sapphire necklace and swept my hair aside to fasten it around my neck. Because he leaned in so close, I could clearly see the red marks on his neck and smell the sickly sweet perfume that obviously wasn't his. Knowing the scent belonged to my own sister made my stomach turn.

He was tall, really tall for a Santa Claus, that I had to tilt my head back to meet his eyes—oh, his eyes. They were an icy gray that seemed to bare my soul, uncovering every hidden secret before his eyes. I felt a cold shiver run down my spine, but I couldn't tell if it was from the cold or the way those eyes made me feel, something so distinct yet I couldn't put my hands on it. “Merry Christmas,” he murmured, his deep baritone causing my heart to thrum so loudly in my chest I could only stand there and gawk like a damn fool.

-00- Aciel really never expected that the festival in the town square would be so full and crowded like this. Even Christmas is still fifteen days away, but everyone seems to be impatient to welcome Christmas and ask Santa for gifts. Aciel, who was holding Ciara in his right hand and his left hand holding the handle of the stroller, felt quite confused with his own idea which did not go according to plan. He thought that people would not crowd this festival other than on weekends.

Candles adorned with pinecones and holly leaves created a luminous scene, and the aroma of delicious food filled the air. On the walls, wreaths made of holly, Christmas baubles, and red ribbons were artistically arranged. Christmas music played softly in the background, adding an additional touch of charm. The emotion in the house was palpable. Family and friends gathered, embracing and exchanging gifts with radiant smiles. Children ran around, their eyes sparkling with excitement at the promise of presents under the tree. Rylee and I embraced, gratitude in our eyes for another Christmas together.

Not with the paycheck. Christmas just got a whole lot fucking worse.
