The telltale signs of Christmas are everywhere: twinkling lights, decorated houses, trees, a cheery atmosphere, the sporadic playing of hymns and carols, an abundance of green and red colours, flashes of silver and gold, busy ornament stores, and Santas ringing bells at every corner.

Arthur and I join the others in the living room, where a beautiful Christmas tree stands, twinkling with lights and ornaments. We gather around, everyone smiling and chatting, waiting for the clock to strike twelve. There’s a sense of anticipation, and I can feel Arthur’s hand tighten around mine.
