The Bride He Bought
Every head turns at once.
I force my smile. “Hello.”
Her hand rests lightly on my arm, guiding me toward the empty seat beside her. “Sit, darling.”
I do, careful not to let my blazer gape as I tuck myself in. My hands look too stiff resting on the linen tablecloth, so I curl them around the napkin instead.
“Ladies,” She says smoothly, “this is Dante Moretti’s wife. Newly married, as I’m sure you all know.”
There’s a ripple of sound around the table, polite but cool. One woman with a razor, sharp bob raises her flute. “Congratulations.” Her tone is flat, like she’s reading it off a script.
