He opened the box.
Inside, on a cloth of charcoal-colored satin, rested a necklace. It was not an ostentatious piece, nothing of shiny gold or vulgar stones. It was a thin platinum chain, so delicate it almost disappeared against the dark velvet. At the front, hanging as a pendant, was a single black diamond, cut into a perfect, smooth square, the size of a fingernail.
