The rug was replaced with a replica, and the scent no longer smells of copper mixed with jasmine. “You should probably slow down,” Finn crosses his arms over his chest, nodding towards the bottle. “It’s been a long day, and it’ll be a longer tomorrow if you don’t.” I stare into the vibrant green of Finn’s eyes, picking out the three different shades that make up his irises. The deepest shade is similar to the needles of a Douglas-fir. The mid-colored shade is similar to the whisps on a Western redcedar. And the lighter, most dominant shade like the leaves on a Bleeding heart.

It was richer, thicker, filled with scents she couldn’t name but somehow understood. Power. Old blood. Magic. She looked closer at the faces in the crowd. Some of them had eyes that gleamed a little too brightly, almost like glass under sunlight, except they weren’t wearing contact lenses. She had always assumed those strange eye colours people wore were fake. Yellow. Silver. Crimson. But now she knew. They were real. She stared a little longer at one man with jet-black hair and glowing amber eyes, and suddenly, she felt him glance back, like he sensed her looking. His stare met hers, and Cassandra’s breath caught.
