We were crashing into the center of the city, right toward a group of silver statues. I hit the pavement hard, the red smoke leaving my body in a final, painful cloud. I looked up, coughing and bleeding. Bryan was there. He had made it to the city. He ran to me, pulling me into his arms. "Hazel! You’re back! I saw the red light in the sky!" "We have to go, Bryan," I wheezed. "The Ghost... she’s not gone. She’s in the statues now." Suddenly, every silver statue in the city stopped moving. Their heads turned toward us at the same time. Their eyes didn't glow red or gold anymore. They were glowing a deep, oily black.

Something waiting. --- Determined not to be paralyzed by fear, I returned to the antique bookstore — to the stories, the secrets, the fragments of forgotten women. The elderly owner greeted me with a knowing smile. “You’re searching for answers,” he said quietly. I nodded. He handed me a leather-bound tome, its cover worn but strong — *Reflections of the Forgotten*. “Read carefully,” he advised. “Sometimes the past speaks through shadows.” --- I spent the night poring over its pages. The book told of women trapped in illusions, caught between worlds — ghosts of themselves, struggling to reclaim their true identities.

Surely she could survive this new world. But deep down, she knew one thing: her past wasn’t finished with her. And whatever shadows had followed her into the city were already plotting their next move. A faint noise from the garden made her turn. It's just a flicker of movement, too quick to identify. Her pulse quickened. “They’re close,” she whispered. Mike’s eyes met hers. “And they’re not waiting.” Outside, the city shone like gold and glass, alive and indifferent. But in its streets and alleys, hidden among the lights, something moved. Watching. —END OF CHAPTER 2— A flicker in the garden caught Clara’s eye. “They’re close,” she whispered.

The air is light and refreshing, I find myself closing my eyes. Opening my eyes once more, I continue to walk forward. As I walk the grass beneath me begins to grow warm. I shift my gaze down and watch as the light green grass begins to glow yellow. From the middle of the clearing purple fog begins to form. The fog is thick and dark as it begins to further spread. I watch as the fog suddenly begins to spiral upward. Slowly the fog begins to clear and a large black dog with glowing purple eyes stands before me. Wisps of black flames surround the dog. The creature approaches me and then lies down in front of me.

Chapter 18 The city lay before them, infinite and unforgiving. Shadows stretched long under trembling streetlights, the air thick with the distant scent of rain and gasoline. Lena and Noah ran. Steps rang out behind them—closer than she would have liked. Damien wouldn't give up. He was a ghost from her past, resurrected just when she'd begun to believe she was finally free. She was breathing fast, her heart racing in her chest. "We need cover."

With a click, the clasp came undone, and the pendant fell to the floor. In a flash, Zoe’s eyes widened. She grabbed my collar like a madwoman. “Y-You… You didn’t switch fates? You lied to me?!” I looked at her in surprise. “What are you talking about?” Miles suddenly exclaimed, “Ow, Maisie. My neck feels itchy.” He pulled down his collar, exposing his collarbone, and clearly revealed who was actually wearing the demonic fate-swapping lock.

Kevin lowered his head and smiled, feeling the familiar warmth and inhaling her sweet, unmistakable scent. He didn't need to look back to know it was her—he knew it was. Emma took a step forward, closing the gap between them, and stood by his side. She hesitantly glanced at him, briefly observing the cigarette burning between his fingers, and parted her lips as if to speak, but no sound escaped. Instead, she averted her gaze toward the cityscape below, silently lost in thought. For a few minutes, neither of them spoke. They stood next to each other, without a single word passing between them. Only the whispers of the night breeze and the feral pounding of their hearts could be heard.
