SIR
Gable walks in a moment later and launches into a lecture on Victorian poetry as Eli tries desperately to refrain from staring at the back to Lucia’s head.
The class continues. Elias reads the words on the board and retains approximately none of them, which is not typical for him but is entirely expected given the circumstances.
Thirty minutes in, the classroom door opens and a member of the staff steps inside, leaning over Mrs. Gable’s desk to whisper to her while handing over a slip of cream-colored paper. Mrs. Gable listens, her eyes flickering across the classroom until they lock onto the back row. She straightens, clearing her throat as the assistant exits.
