It hadn’t happened since I was twelve, but since I had some Alpha in my line, I could actually use an Alpha Command. However, it was too deep for me to reach most of the time. Closing my eyes, I let myself relax as I let him comfort me and my breathing slowed to where I wasn’t struggling to take a breath. The sound of the doorknob trying to turn to open the door, pulled me from the calming state that Beta Shawn had just put me in, and he pulls away and says, “It’s just Alpha Chance.” He then moved to the door and unlocked it so that Alpha Chance could join us.

Joshua walked to me. “I have to do this. Not for myself, but for my pack that I have served for ten years,” I said, facing the camera. The media had turned silent. “First of all, I have an announcement for the Autumn pack and the world. I, Carys Elffire, am no longer the beta of the Autumn pack. Currently, the beta position is empty, but do not worry… Alpha Joshua will soon select a new beta for the pack, a better one.” I paused and accessed the gathering. The whispering among the guests collided with the confusion in the media.

And some wolves didn’t like it. Beta Cassian confronted Alexander. “She’s not one of us anymore. You’ve brought a weapon into our home.” Alexander slammed him against the wall. “She’s my mate. Say another word, and I’ll forget we were ever brothers.” But the damage was done. Doubt slithered through the pack like a poison. Old loyalties began to fray. Emily noticed the change in their eyes, no longer pitying, now suspicious. She stepped into the training yard alone, facing down warriors who once mocked her. “Anyone who thinks I’m weak, prove it now.” No one moved.

With everything that was happening around me, I made a mental note about NEVER, NEVER discussing any of my plans with mom over the phone and would share the same with Mom. I repeat again that ‘JUST THE TITLE OF BETA FEMALE was given to me, not the powers and authority, not until I would get marked and mated with the Beta of the pack. After all this, both the pairs got themselves busy thanking the guest and all the tiny little functions that followed after that. “Are you getting bored?”, The Beta asked. Maybe he would have seen me making faces. “Yeah! I want to leave from here.”, I responded, getting irritated.

Tate responded, not even bothering to hide the resentment in his voice. Brook went to check on Bailey to see if she was awake, while we guys gathered around the living room. I understood why Tate was still sour about what had happened when he had been in a coma, especially since I was still mad about it. Not once had I ever wanted to take on a role of power, I hadn’t even wanted to become Beta. If it hadn’t been for the previous Beta being forced out, I probably would have kept doing what I was doing. Becoming Alpha was the worst possible idea for me. I enjoyed my freedom and as Beta, I still had that freedom.

They arranged a time later that evening, and Dane and Stig spent the rest of the day on edge. Dane rapped his knuckles impatiently on the table as he joined the video chat. The wait seemed endless before the blank square finally came to life and Alpha Aiden’s face filled it. His backdrop was nondescript except for the ornate chair he was sitting on, which looked hard carved, and the top was intertwined with thorns from a rosebush. “Beta Dane, can you hear me ok?” “Yes, perfect Alpha. Before we start, I have to say that I love the chair.”

Like there was no tomorrow. I was tired. I couldn’t breathe. My knees felt like my bones were dislocated.
