“And if he wrote those warnings for you,” Kaelor said carefully, “then at some point he did not agree with what he was told.”
“Or he wanted to see how far I would go before I broke.”
Darek stepped closer, close enough that I was aware of him without turning my head.
“You don’t believe that,” he said.
“What I believe doesn’t matter. What happens does.”
“And what happens?”
“He will come,” I answered. “And when he does, he won’t come as the man I knew.” My voice stayed steady.
