I open my mouth, but no sound comes out- for a moment I forget my own name; I’m just completely captivated. “Serena,” I breathe, my eyes locked on his. “Serena Harper.” “Serena,” he repeats, and my name has never sounded as sweet as it does on his tongue. The corner of his mouth ticks up into the most devastatingly handsome smile I’ve ever seen. “Reid Raines.” Damn, even his name is sexy as hell. His close proximity has his scent swirling all around me, sage and sandalwood and citrus, intoxicating me like a drug.

I punch him in the arm and, being the nice guy that he is, pretends that I actually hurt him. Ryleigh skewered the beef and got closer to Waylon when he saw how serious he was, “Have you been undergoing military training for three years?” Waylon looked at her. “Something like that.” Ryleigh nodded and patted his shoulder. “But boys look better with a tan. Look at Colton, he’s as fair as a girl. I guess he didn't tell her that I rejected his invitation. Okay, quick backstory/introduction. Colton was my senior in high school but we weren't on speaking terms then. He was two years ahead of me. Fortunately, we met again here in college and became good friends. I introduced him to Camila when he broke up with his Ex, Mia, who is the Captain of his team's cheerleaders. Jamie is my ex-boyfriend and in the same football team as Colton. I broke up with him when I caught him cheating on me with Mia's friend.

And with that, he turned and stalked out of the cabin as fast as he had entered, shutting the door hard behind him. My mother collapsed into a chair, shaking. "Who was that, Annie? His power.it was wonderful. I've never felt anything like it, not even from the Martial Lord." I kept mute, but I knew then my mom knew my state. I couldn't say a lot. I looked down at my babies, their tiny fists opening and closing. My sons needed a pack. They needed the best protection they would have. I teased. Colton blinked, swallowed hard, then dragged a hand down his face as if that would help shake whatever was going through his head. “Darlin’,” he exhaled, voice rougher than usual, “you just wrecked every thought I had.” I rolled my eyes, even as warmth crept up my spine. Finally taking a second to glance at him, I had to admit—he cleaned up real nice. The cowboy look suited him. The fitted black jeans, the crisp button-down tucked neatly under a leather belt, the polished boots—it all worked. And then there was the bolo tie, resting at the base of his throat, adding an edge of old-school charm that only he could pull off.

His mouth parted, stunned. For the first time in days, maybe weeks, Carter exhaled without pain. Damon approached, quiet now, no longer needing to step in.
